Back in the job market.

Kind of got kicked in the head yesterday. Our company president called to let me know they are going to a national purchasing model and my department will no longer exist. Bottom line is, I will no longer have a job come January 1. Well a Merry Christmas and a Ho Ho Ho to you. Time to refresh the resume and start looking.

    Sorry to hear.

Hopefully it's an opportunity for you to get out there and come out with a better job!

Good friends of mine BOTH got let go at the same time this summer (they worked for the same company).

Fast forward 6 weeks and they both now have better jobs making way more money.

Hopefully you can polish this **** like they did!

Two suggestions (with utmost seriousness & candor):
    1) Retirement
    2) Consulting

The combination's worked pretty well for me/us to date.
Still not livin' in a cardboard box -- and I don't miss setting budgets, doing performance reviews, or populating dashboards. As a consultant, I still get to do fun stuff that I am (at least, arguably) good at, and I help solve folks' problems. All the fun stuff, with minimal drudgery.

Mr. Ward, in total seriousness, it sucks big time to be done to as you've been done -- unfortunately it is symptomatic of "the times" (leaving out any political rancor; the cultural changes in business transcend the local eccentricities of the formerly United States). I hope you are entitled to a generous severance package, so that you can foment a measured response as you plan your next adventure.

Let us know if we can help in any way, shape, or form, too! I doubt that my network & yours overlap much -- but one never knows!

That stinks Luther. I'll just echo what others have said...you are well-spoken, intelligent, modest (yet confident). I can't imagine you not coming out of this in good shape. Best of luck to you.

Sucks Luther.....at least they are carrying you threw the holidays though. My wife's company lays off people in October every year. You only have one strike against you as far as I can tell.....your age.

Not being sarcastic either, depending on your industry and circumstances age plays a huge roll. No matter what though, I'm sure you'll land on your feet.....and if not, just look up and you'll see the Polk hawks flying over your gear. lol

Luther, been there, done that. Believe me, while it sucks, I always ended up better off. Now that DT is going to bring all the jobs back, opportunity is knocking. As Skip said, get the unemployment the first day you leave. Hopefully you can just take a break for a few weeks, rest and relax, and then get back into work mode. Good luck.

OR.....you can say screw it all, take that early retirement and go relax on a beach somewhere eating Grouper and watching the pretty girls strut by.

Or go back to the grind.

    Hmmm.....tough choice. :p

Or -- early retirement and hunker down amidst the snow and gloom of a New Hampshire winter -- and, know what? It still beats workin' full time.

    Sorry, Mr. Ward! :)

Now there's a man with an idea. ^^^^.

Have to say, there is a comfort level, be it right or wrong, waking up and not having anywhere to be by a set time. Obviously those desires come after a lifetime of participation in the rat race. Today, people want to by-pass that participation and head straight for the retirement aspects. lol.

Luther is a smart cookie, he'll land on his feet no matter which path he takes. Smell that Grouper yet ? ;)

You've gotta stop and smell the grouper
You've gotta count your many blessings every day...
