Thrift store goodie...

Hey gang, I came home from a local thrift store yesterday with something I am quite proud of. A Marantz CD40 cdplayer. Its a 1989 single disc model and WOW does it sound amazing. I dont' have the manual or remote (wired!) but this is certinally going to be my new CD source, it makes the previous Teac cd-changer seem like a bad dream. Here's a pic.
I snagged it for $14.99. Its in almost perfect physical/cosmetic condition and plays flawlessly. Anyone know how much these things are worth, or even more interestingly how much they retailed for in 89? Well, just thought I'd share.

Wow, very informative. Thanks brett! Guess I did make a good find. Listening to it now...amazing (first quality stand alone CD player I've really ever had). I can't believe it even plays CDRs and has almost no trouble at all with scratched cds. Wish I had the scehmatic for making a remote.Polk CS245i Center

nice find there guy.. and it looks to be in really good condition for it's age as well. You saved a bundle over having to buy a new one.. and like you said.. it sounds amazing. It's find like those that make this hobby so much fun.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I've got one of those pups in the original box with owners manual.
I got IT, along with a 170wpc, mid 80's vintage Marantz TA-170 audio/video receiver, for about what you paid for it. Some of the worst 170 watts that Marantz ever produced, but it was remote controlled, came with box and manual, and was easy to find a lover for.

Just out of curiosity, how long is the cord on the remote George?Polk CS245i Center

The cd player did not come with wired remote controller, and the receiver remote was wireless.

Well, I've contacted a Marantz dealer and I'm going to see how much a replacement remote runs me. I can't stress enough how much a few dollars on a nice piece of vintage equipment can pay off. Hit those discout stores! Its kinda like a treasure hunt.Polk CS245i Center

To each his own, but I'm not sure I'd sink a lot of money into that cd player. It's from around 1985 or so, long before Marantz started to enjoy recognition again with perhaps the CD-63 series that came a few years later, and was a bit more refined in sound. This is a pretty basic, no-frills, unremarkable cd player.
You want to be looking for Magnavox's from that time frame, if anything. Or Phillips.

Magnavox CDB-650 is a perennial favorite. CDB-473 was okay too. I had one. Maybe 560 also. I can't remember the Phillips models, but they (Phillips) were making the Magnavox's also. The 650 was a favorite of modifiers, due to its rock solid transport system (CDM-4?). The Euphonic Technology ET-650 that I paid $5 for was a modified Magnavox 650. That was a super machine. Got maybe 4 years out of it.
Technics SLP-G300 was also a pretty good sounding machine. There are other sleepers but my brain is shot.
