Definitive Bp2000 vs BP8060 vs Polk SDA 1.2TL

So, I have gone a little crazy. I currently have a set of Polk 1.2TL, full RDO replacements already, a set of BP8060ST and I am picking up a mint set of BP2000 this weekend.

My primary use will be 90% HT, I have a in ceiling definitive center and Definitive in ceiling rears.

I am wanting my mains to handle the lows of home theater, the goal is no other speakers in the room.

BP2000, 4*6.5" woofers, 2*1" tweeters, 1*15" powered sub per speaker. This was Definitives top of the line fifteen years ago.

BP8060ST, 3* 4.5" midbass, 2*1" tweeters, 1*10" powered sub with dual 10" passive radiators

Polk SDA SRS 1.2TL, we know the specs.

I plan to power these with an upper end Pioneer Elite receiver, will consider an external amplifier for the mains.

My initial impression is to use the BP2000, the 15" is powered and sealed and should naturally hit around 25hz in room all day.

If you were in this position, what would you choose and why?

I would love to have those options!!!

I would just one of the def-tech pairs, probably the newest ones for the waf. Aren't you married now Trey? Now way in h&ll my wife lets those SDAs in our house, but those new def-techs are really slim, and probably still offer pretty awesome bass.

Of course, as you know your ears can only decide (unless your better half decides for you!)

The 8060's....better all around speaker than the 2000's. Be a shame to use 1.2's strictly for HT.

I do agree the 8060 will have a better sounding top half, plus I have the ATmos modules to go on top.

My only concern with the 8060 is the bass extension, I wonder if anyone has ever done a graph of the in room response of either.

If you are thinking BP2000's for the bass extension, don't. I auditioned them back when they were DefTechs top of the line. The bass was very loose & boomy. I ended up going with BP30's and an external sub. Much more musical.

Those two passive drivers are to allow the 10" driver to perform like its in a ported enclosure. That should let the speaker go lower than if it was a single 10..

Since I know you've got an attic space above your room......

Have we thought about Infinite Baffle enclosures shooting down into the room through the ceiling...

Then you dont NEED to worry about the response of the mains... and the sub's arent "IN" the room, so its a double win

I am pretty happy with my setup. It's a big difficult room with crazy nulls and only treatments are acoustic panels behind fronts and rears. I do not care to put a lot of extra money into the HT side, but feel this is adequate and enjoyable.

    Fronts - 1.2 (full mods)
    Center - CS350 LS
    Surrounds (corners) - DefTech BP-2000
    Backs (ceiling) - Polk AB-500
    Sub - Hsu VTF 3.4

Bass from the BP's helps fill and balance the room. And the rear tweeter bounces nicely off the back wall. I will say I was never in love with the BP's as fronts during the growing family years (95% HT/5% Music) but I've grown to appreciate them much more in their surround role.

That is interesting, are you sure you auditioned the BP2000 and not the BP2000TL or the BP3000TL. The only reason I asked is that the BP2000 is sealed while the others feature a quasi TL port. Granted, def tech has never been known to be musical but more general listening and movies reproduction.

I have only heard the BP3000TL before and that was many moons ago. I am curious to see how the BP2000 does, a review long ago said the -3db point was 23hz which is kind of what I am looking for.

I do agree though that the 8060 is an awesome speaker and I will definitely have to compare the two to really know which one is going to suit my situation. I just feel the 8080 would be a bette comparison.

I appreciate the feedback and I would love to hear a setup with the 1.2 for mains and the bp2000 for rears! :P

I picked up the BP2000 this weekend, I have been into audio now for like... 15 years? In fifteen years, I've never seen a pair of speakers in such good condition. They literally look like they were in hibernation the last decade, beautiful condition.

Definitely excited to compare them to the8060!

My initial thoughts on the BP2000 is that this is the Definitive speaker I loved so much with the BP10B... Just true authoritative sound, slam, lots of sound, maybe not the most focused but puts out pleasing sound all over the house... Having fun so far with these. I have the 8060 boxed up but will pull them out in a week or so to compare.

I know what the 1.2TL can do and I just don't think they are what I am looking for on the budget I'm going for. I know the Definitives can be adequately powered off of a receiver for movies where as the 1.2TL demands a separate amp...
