Picked up one of these from a Woot Off yesterday.

For only $150 should hopefully be a decent upgrade from my current Pmount turntable. If not I can easily make my money back based on what it normally sells for. First Turntable that isn't a Pmount.

One of the Hanpin OEMs by the looks of it -- but, absolutely, ought to be well worth $150.

I saw that and was going to post it here. Glad you snagged one. I'm also curious about it and might have jumped on it but I already have an Onkyo CP-1046F from yester-year and a Pioneer PL-530 that I use.Stan

Yeah it was an all day deal on Friday and I was going back and forth but didn't pull the trigger, but it showed up again on the woot off and decided to take a chance.

Well got the Onkyo in today, really fast shipping from Woot/Amazon. The sound difference is like night and day from my Technics, which it should be, but I was really surprised at the level of difference. The Onkyo sound is much more open and natural. Just a much more engaging sound. It also seems to have a higher level of output. On the old Technics I had to turn the volume way up to for decent sound level but I'm able to use normal volume levels with the new Turntable.
I'm highly impressed with the build quality of the table, very solid and heavy. everything clicks into place easily and I was able to set up with minimal issues. Really clean and sharp looking piece of equipment imo.
Back to the volume difference... do a lot of older Turn tables require higher volume even when run through a Phono Amp, or is there likely some issue with the TT. Is it possible Pmount tables require a higher volume level?

The cartridge in my opinion has a lot to do with that. It could be the cart. On the technics has a lower output in general.Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's.

The sound level is a "red herring" of sorts.
The output level as a function of, say, the volume control setting depends on two things.
*The intrinsic output level of the cartridge
* The gain of the phono preamplifier stage
The output level of a typical moving magnet or moving iron cartridge (which is measured under a defined set of tracking conditions is usually in the range of 2 to 10 millivolts (mV).
If one cartridge has an nominal output of, say, 10 mv, and another one has an output of 3 mV, the 10 mV cartidge has about 3 dB more output than the 3 mV cartridge. That will translate to 3 dB more signal, all things being equal.
Does the Onkyo have a built-in phono preamp/RIAA equalization? If so, it may have more gain than the preamp/EQ the OP was using with the comparator Technics.

I believe that the standard (or, at least, typical) conditions for measuring output of a cartridge is a 1kHz test tone cut on a record with a peak velocity of 5 cm/second. This isn't an area in which which I have any expertise, though. I am still a little bewildered by the geometry and physics of stereo record signal transduction!

There is an incredible amount of information contained at the link above. I cannot vouch for much of it, but since it is from Shure, it's probably pretty technically accurate! On the other hand, they do have a dog in that hunt :-P
