Pioneer sx1000tw, SDA 1c

Hey guys, new to the fourms, so I hope this is the right place for this question. My dad recently gave me his Pioneer sx1000tw he bought new in Vietnam. Currently I have this hooked up to some Monitor 60's, I have to say that I am enjoying it quite a bit. However, I recently stumbled across some SDA 1c's, hearing all the rave reviews, I figured I'd go pick them up this weekend. So my question is, will this receiver drive them, or would it be best not to even try? I am not having any luck finding much info on this, any help is appreciated.

The SDA-1C is a lot of speaker to drive with that Pioneer receiver. For now, just don't try to drive them hard and plan on getting a power amp to drive them.

Not a bad, fairly early ss receiver... but not really up to the task at hand, I'd opine.

Doesn't mean it's not worth a try (unless - ??? - it runs afoul of that "common ground" thing).

I played around once with my Marantz 2252b & hooked it up to my 2bs (which are smaller than the 1c's & when i got it to 9:30-10:00 on the volume dial it started to distort.... That is 52wpc.... Then i hooked it to a Yamaha CR 80wpc receiver & it did much better. It drove them at levels that were "do'able" to my ears.... Honestly after getting to know SDA's with help here & in my listening area-i find it much more pleasing with a Amplifier with more power the better. Thats just my opinion.... I have a saying that goes like this. You can haul a 24 ft camper with a 6cyl Ranger right. But if you haul it with a F350 which is gonna do the job better ? & do it with ease

  • Thanks for the Info, that actually puts me at a bit more of a crossroads now. My LR setup is a Yammy rx-v777bt with a Rotel rb980bx, which I've got hooked up to rti12's. I let the Yammy drive my csi5 and monitor 60 rears. So maybe they'll take the place of the 12's for now. I've heard 12's are not "great" for music, but I find them quite enjoyable. I am hoping the 1c's will be an "upgrade" in that department, but I am a little skeptical. So would I be better off replacing the Rotel, to drive the 12's in the LR, and putting that on the 1c's or getting something different for the 1c's? Money isn't too big of an object, but I'm not trying to go too crazy on this, either. Thanks!

Just make sure its a "common ground amplifier". Ive heard a Adcom gfa 100WPC amplifier pushing some 1c's with a decent preamp & good source & it sounded quite well actually on SDA's

The picture in my Avatar is a int tube amplifier with "i think" its 50wpc it has been hooked to my 1c's & CRS+'s & has drove them nicely. There are lots out there to chose from if you wanna make those SDA's sound good & it wont break the wallet too bad. Parasound makes some great amplifiers & if your ok with used, there are some deals to be had out there

So this Saturday I made the trip and picked up some 1c's in pretty good condition, a few chips out of the veneer, one side panel needs glued back down. They even came with a (makeshift) interconnect, which could be improved upon. So after hooking them up to the sx1000tw, they did sound pretty good, but quite fatiguing after even short periods of time, my ears would actually start to hurt. However I didn't experience that at the demo. So today I took my Rotel rb980bx from the RTI12's and I must say there is quite the difference. Looks like I will have to invest in another Rotel amp for the 12's again, as I find them to be quite nice sounding. I look forward to slowly putting some time and money into these, and upstream equipment to get the most out of my 2 channel set up. :)

Some free advice. You can do much, much better than that Rotel.

Just my opinion in regards to driving 1c's. They will play music with 50 0r 60 watts of power, but they will thrive on an amp with some clean power in the 100w / channel on up. I have used a Yaqin integrated 60w / channel tube amp, which powered them but they were lacking depth and detail. Also have used a SS Adcom amp at 200w/ channel with a SS Adcom pre and a Dared tube pre. Both of those combos opened up the 1c's with great soundstage detail and depth, with the Dared pre offering more warmth. (No pun intended) Currently using a Rogue Cronus Magnum II tube integrated with 100w / channel. Very happy with this current Rogue and 1c's combination.
  • Thanks Faustin, I have 120 wpc on them now, they sound MUCH better than the 50. I have to say, I am quite happy with the Rotel & 1c combo too man. I may look into tubes someday, from what I've read it seems to be a valid option. Right now, I am just happy as a hog in chit with what I've got.
