    Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
    ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each

i really don't think they are all that bad, they just get a bad rap.
it seems like in the audio world if a amp is not made in someones garage with some sort of exotic part and given a fancy name and charge $30,000 per monoblock it crap. also i think sony suffers
from the "i heard it" disease.

Sony isn't so bad. I would not buy Sony though. Sony lives off its name like Bose does. 90% of people I know buy Sony because (1) they are uneducated and (2) because they want every single speaker and component to be the same name brand. What is great about HT is that you can choose a different manufactures for each speciallized item. Like Onkyo (minus getting there a hands on the plug and go market) all they make are components. That allows them to concentrate on making quality merchandise. Polk only makes speakers and so on. Sony has there hands in EVERYTHING therefore not exceeding in anything. Just an average product with a great name. Also they are so large that they have terrible cust. service. No reason to care about the little man because there are a 1000 more people buying new products every minute. I hope I have made my point and people feel what I am saying. O. K. I'm done. 2 cents

Sony dvd players are good, as long as you use the bit stream out and let your dacs do the decoding.. Sony for years has been a good video company, they overexpanded on audio and really never produced it right... they are a over commericalized company. they flood the market with crap!! there theory is throw enough of **** against the wall and something has got to stick!

Sony's upper reciever lines are ok I guess... I have two sony DVD players and think they do just fine! sony speakers on the other hand... not a fan of...though I am using a pair of the cheap sony's with the 6.5 and tweet for surround..and they do a hell of a job for that...Music..I'd never do on them..

only thing sony to buy, in my mind is a television, and as soon as i upgrade to a RPTV, it probably won't be sony. after about 4 D.O.A.'s with sony products, i gave up on them. CS is horrible, they just don't care about what there putting out there, just how much it is bringing in...

Haved used Sony ES line for years. Hand built.
Amps/ receivers/ tape decks. Quality stuff.
You can, if you act quick like, pick up last years
    receivers 444's, 555's, for a song.

Like any big company, mid priced, mass marketed,
stuff makes up the majority of their line.

the only thing sony makes that is really worth buying is there tv's. seems to be where they focused and let every thing else be sold by name recognition only. used to like some sony car audio stuff about 15 years ago but now i would'nt even consider any thing but a tv
    Speakers:
    Definitive BP7001sc mains
    Definitive C/L/R 3000 center
    Polk RT800i's rears

    Onkyo TX-NR3010
    Emotiva XPA five Gen 3

Sony is big & makes a lot of mid-priced, mass-market stuff that's indistinguishable from everyone else. I've heard good things about TV's, cassette decks (esp ES cassette decks), the newest home minidisc decks, ES components in general, boomboxes, & world band portable radios. Of course, you could find people to say the opposite, since Sony is so big. I think that instead of approaching the product as a "Sony", you should approach it as an individual product with the usual research needed before buying. There's no way to predict the quality of a $1500 ES amp via feedback re unrelated products in a different price range.

I purchased the STR-DE 845 for 299.99 on clearance for the new STR-DE x75 series. I recommended to a friend to get the 875. The Sonys recievers are good products. The DSP sound fields (minus the echo effects) are great for a basic 5.1 setup.

Sony DVD players are great middle line players. You could probably get a DVD player with matching features for less.

As posted earlier, Sony develops in almost all categories. Some are definately better than others. For example would never recommend a Sony speaker to anyone. Their stats are fudged a bit (they do not report frequency response in the +/- 3 db range). So the bad rap comes from some of their different lines of product.

So yes on the Recievers. Maybe on the DVD player. NO on the speakers. IMO anyway.

I have had many receivers in my years.... Yamaha, Denon, Hk. and
before i purchased my latest ht receiver, i agonized for months
listening and reading. I ended up with the Sony 1075 and after a week of learning how to work it (manual is awful), I must say i am
very pleased with it. Sounds great in all modes and has very clean
    sound.

I retired a Sony DE 575 which I thought was crap. The FM tuner had problems within the first year. Sony does have an ES line which is better quality, so I guess you get what you pay for. I do have a Sony car stereo which is working OK.

I'm currently using a Denon AVR-3802 which is working out nicely.

i would be interested myself to here any negative comments that can be backed up about the dvd, de-receiver line. I purchased a sony DVD player and DE875 sony receiver plus a polk audio rm6200 series speakers and i can honestly say this is an excellent sounding system together for the price.

I am new to the HT scene, but I recently bought a Sony DA3ES and RM 7500 system. I will agree with Parke 15, the manuals that come with it are awefull. To my admittadly novice ear it sounds good. I have no complaints yet.

OK....I've held my tongue long enough....Sony is EXCELLENT equipment. Some would have you believe that theres a factory somewhere where cube alarm clocks are made along-side hi-fi equipment, this is not the case. There are teams of engineers employed by Sony that make a myriad of products, this is true, but do you really think theres not a design team that follows a
"high-end" product from start to finish. Although I will agree with most on the speakers, although I am currently using Sony bookshelf speakers, which provide excellent high end to fill out the bass from my 350. I have used a DB-940, for about a year, with absoloutly no complaints, an excellent amp replaced this year by the 1075.
Honestly I'm kinda sick of this "micro-brew" attitude of some equipment owners. Believe me, if you can walk into any medium to high -end audio shop in the United States (this includes Circut City) or the world for that matter, and purchase an Onkyo or Harmon Karden, its not that exclusive. The people who make the true high-end equipment have no need to advertise to the public or sell through middle-men. I LOVE my stereo/home theater and will defend it with my life, but I'm fully aware there is better stuff out there. I just don't think that its sitting on the warehouse shelf at J&R Discount.

This is a very touchy subject, most people don't want to hear that their system sucks(not saying that it does) it's kind of like the people who buy bose and swear it's the best thing since sliced bread, and know what, to them it is, is this bad??? NO!
this is why there is such a vast array of audio companies for each persons tastes and needs, what sounds like crap to some, others find it fantastic.. this is what the world is based on, opinions, likes and dislikes. I have always said that if you like something and you think it sounds good THATS ALL THAT MATTERS!!! no one can take your opinion away from you, this is america not afghanstan!!!

with that said, I say SONY IS CRAP!!(IMOP)

I still have the Sony CD player I rode my bicycle to buy back in '86. I don't use it as I got a Sony carousel in '92. Both work and sound great. I recently sold a Sony DPL receiver that served me quite well for years until I needed 5.1.

My only problem with the receiver is that it blew one of my Polk Monitor 10Bs. I was doing a test between them and a pair of speakers rated at 30 watts. I think the Sony clipped (not enough reserve) as the 30 watt speakers are fine. I've read in audioreview.com that the newer Sony recievers are notorious for having rear amp problems.

    That's my $.02.

    i personally think sony sucks
    in audio anyways
i think the main reasons people buy sony is
    1. i have to admit their speakers look pretty cool
    2. compared to higher quality brands--they can be cheaper
i mean why buy a $700 rockford fosgate amp when u can get the same wattage for $500 with sony?
    3. theyre uneducated
    yeah theyre cheaper to buy

but cheaper to buy also means cheaper quality which eventually means when u buy 2 mm120s and run 500 watts into them and ur sony amp over heats or something ull end up spending more money in the long run
