Millennials...

..., I just found out is defined as someone born between 1980 and 2000. I refuse to believe that I'm part of the same generation as someone who's 16 years old right now. My face isn't buried in a phone, I don't use Facebook, I moved out of my parents when I was 17, I was in the military for 4 years, I've had at least one job at damn near all times...

Somebody that is 36 years old right now, 4 years away from 40, is a millennial? Really? Thoughts?

I was at a work conference a year ago of some 250 people, and they had us raise our hands to identify what generation we were from. They read out the same age range as in your OP. So I had to cop to being a millennial despite being born in '83.

I think I was one of five at the conference, and it did feel kind of shameful. Like everyone felt I would be the one too busy using twitter to participate.

Considering the name millennial refers to those reaching adulthood somewhere around the year 2000, a start date around 1980 is about right for the term. The term is a generalization though. Individuals will vary a lot in any generation, and I think people's behavior lines up with their age and level of responsibility expected of them rather than anything generational. What is considered acceptable behavior has certainly changed over the last few decades. Regardless of that, getting kids and a mortgage tend to make people more responsible no matter the generation.

Born in 83. I refuse to believe I'm like these spoiled millennial brats that call themselves adults these days. We didn't have a lot of money growing up and I have worked my bag off to get where I am today. I even skipped school to go work lol. I don't walk and text or participate in social media. I hate tight pants, it makes my nuts hurt.

As fast as tech changes, a generational change is made around every 10 years now. I have 5 kids born from '80 through '90 and they are worlds apart in their experiences and educational styles. My oldest didn't even have computers offered until high school when the youngest started school on the same machines. I recall the time when the oldest were not allowed cell phones 'cause only drug dealers carried them, but by the time the youngest were in middle school, they had them simply for the safety factor.

Not ragging on you Dennis, but what safety factor, the one made up by the social engineering media? The world is no more dangerous for kids today than it was when I grew up. Most of the time our parents didn't know exactly where we were, but you made damn sure you were home in time for dinner or there was real trouble.

Kids today live in fear, fear of the big bad world and fear of themselves because they aren't allowed to be kids and therefore do not develop the skills needed to grow up. As proof we have college age kids wanting a safe space like they are still 2 years old.

I have a few in the family that are millennials in their late 20's & early 30's.
This is their philosophy:
1. recycle, repurpose reuse
2. embraces their college professors ideology
3. politically correct
4. earth will be uninhabitable if we don't act now
5. I'm smarter than you are
6. atheist
7. your cars and older appliances are wasteful
8. facebook
9. still lives in their parents basement
10. safe spaces
11. mom and dad will pay for it
12. no savings

You can blame Millennials , and they deserve most of it. But I also blame the parents for coddling them. It's the older generation that drives them 100 feet to the end of the driveway so the kids can sit in the car in safe comfort while they wait for the bus. It's the older generation that gave them a trophies for just participating. And many more examples.

Millennials are adults now and need to take responsibility for their own lives. But they were greatly influenced by their parents.

BTW, another Millennial trend is that many of them don't hunt, again it's because many baby-boomers don't or stopped hunting. My 14 year old started bow hunting this year and is in his own spot. He may be gun hunting at the end of the year if I can get his firearms license in time. We live in a socialist state, and he has to wait 12 weeks before he can get his license.

That's funny you bring this up as i have had more than one conversation in the last month on how i don't know a single person, younger than i, that still hunts. Mind you, my FID card has lapsed and i haven't found time to renew but, it seems to be a dying activity. Without population control, you will see more deer on the side of the road and the turkeys seem to be running amok nowadays. Population control is a real thing!

I'm 24 so right in the middle of the millennial generation. Doesn't mean I am like the majority of us, Had my first job at 15, moved out from my mother's that same year. Now I work a 9-5 (more like 4a-1) M-F, come home and listen to music or watch tv then on the weekends go outside with my little one and teach her the finer things. Fishing, softball, cooking, baking, cleaning and of course music.

I never hunted, we never kept g*ns in the house, but I've used them plenty and I'm sure you can guess how I feel about them. I have many peers who hunt, and plan to go asap. I did fish many times, salmon and trout.

hunting is still very popular here; it's viewed, I think, as an inalienable right in most of Northern New England.

New Hampshire has a deal for a lifetime hunting license for "newborns" (under 1 year of age). $300 one-time fee (plus $4.50 "habitat and agent fees").

There's also a lot of young hunters around here, as mhardy said about N.E., but its completely different than when I was growing up. We started very young with cap guns, cork guns, wrist-rockets, bow and arrow, and eventually B.B. guns. Every kid had them. All my friends eventually had a B.B. gun and we had them with us all the time, we were outside all day long. Some kids had the ones you pumped, one guy pumped his 100 times just for kicks and the mechanism got so hot it started to bend. Most of us had cheap used ones as we didn't have much dough and our parents sure as he** weren't going to just give it to us. Eventually, most of us got used bolt action .22's. Almost all of my friends had them. No scopes or other amenities. We spent lots of hours target practicing. .22 ammo was incredibly cheap. I was an NRA sharpshooter when I was 8 years old. Now I never see any kids with any kind of B.B. gun or anything else. Their Dad's might get them into hunting, but I don't think they shoot much before hunter safety class at age 12 or whatever. Their Dad's sit with them for a number of years in the deer stand, too, but from what I can see a lot of young hunters cannot sit still for any period of time and so they don't stay in their stands all day. Hardly any from what I can tell have any part in gutting their own game, much less butchering, especially deer.

When I was a kid I was already heading out to the blind at 12yrs old by myself. Couldn't wait to get that dear open as my poor fingers were usually frozen.
During hunting season half the guys had there guns in their truck rack in school parking lot, and we carried buck knifes on our hip in school, and this was the mid 80's
