SPEAKER PROTECTION FOR ADCOM 565 AMPS

Yes, we all know the history of the 565 dc output. Looking for a suitable safe guard. Don't want to destroy my newly modded SDA SRS 2.3's (low impedance inductors, 4 ohm, not 6.5). Excellent job done by David at DHS SPEAKERS!

Original owner had amps repaired for leaky caps/boards cleaned, etc ....

Local repair guy suggested an inline fuse on the speaker outputs. Could be mounted on back of amp. Suggested a 2-2.5 amp fuse (doesnt sound right to me???). seems awfully small. Easy enough but is it adequate?

Another outfit (EBC ELECTRONICS) offers a 30 amp relay module that should trip if any dc voltage becomes present at output. Sounds like the way to go, but cost $100 each plus shipment of amps. Thats like $300 ... would like a cheaper option if possible.

Any thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated!!

Fuses protect the amplifier in case the speaker wires are shorted. They may protect the speakers from being over-driven--if the fuses are selected appropriately. (I wouldn't count on speaker protection from fuses unless the fuses are built-into the speaker design.)

The relay MIGHT help. Given the price...I'm not enthusiastic.

The amps have been serviced. I say you either trust them, or buy replacement amplifier(s) that have protection circuitry you do trust.
  • I just aquired the amps ... One thing that bothers me is the person that did previous repairs is the same one that recommended the fuse option. On the other end, there is a flea market out here that sells vintage upper/high end audio equiptment and they recommend him for repairs on their web site. Is what it is!

I do know from reading a post that an established member had SDA SRS 2.3, fully modded (same as I) ... Anyway, they went thru several different amps before settling on the Adcom 565 mono's .... AND it fits my budget!

Anyway, I'll watch them closely till I can get them FULLY REFURBISHED, then I can party on with no worries.

    Appreciate your input!
