RDO- 194 and SL 2000 Mix

I had three RDO-194 tweeters so I thought I would put two in and leave the SL 2000s in place until I got another RDO-194. This is in the SRS2s I recently got. I really like the SL 2000 at low volume but up louder that 5KHZ or whatever freq. spike really hurts my ears and it sounds like every S squeals in my ears like crazy. I put the 194s in top hole but they did not want to fit as the speaker brace hit the back of them so I left the SL 2000s in the top holes and put the RDO-194s in the bottom hole. I think it sounds great as is. As far as I see on the factory drawing the tweeters are crossed over differently. I wonder if this is the reason for that. Either way MrBuhl is sending another 194 so at that i will make modification in order to get them installed. Any thoughts on this one ?

  • I think in my SRS 2s, the biggest improvement that I made was switching to the RDO-194s. That said, I never tried mixing the two.

The tweets are what's called a cascaded taper array and each tweeter successively puts out a lesser and lesser signal while all magically blending the tweets together in a coherent dispersion pattern.

Use all the same tweets for the best results.

No doubt I will, thank you for that response as that make sense to me. I did try them the opposite way around and that defiantly did not sound as good.

I have also tried this in my SRS 2s when I pulled two of the RDO-194s to use in my then newly acquired CRSs until two new RDO-194s came in from Polk. I had just the opposite arrangement however with the 194s on top and SL-2000s on the bottom. Like yourself, I was very surprised to hear that it sounded good. I don't think it sounded quite as good as all 194s, but it was better than expected. Get another 194 when you get a chance, but until then enjoy what you have! It's definitely better than all 2000s.

I tried them in the top and bottom holes, seems to me the bottom w 194 and the top with 2000s sounded best but I got the one RDO I needed in today and did the cabinet mod. Still listening. Made a better interconnect as well. These are some of the baddest speakers ever. I thought I had hit gold when I got my SDA2b speakers all modded out. Man let me say that the SRS2 puts them to shame. Not that I would give the SDA2b speakers up, They are staying.
