Is this RT series configuration overkill? And what ceiling speakers to add?

I am setting up a room 7m wide x 4.5m long x 2.4m heigh (23 x 15 x 8 feet) for home theatre. The room is partly open plan with a 2.5m (8') openning to another room. I already have a B&W ASW650 12" sub and am looking at purchasing an Integra DRX-3 receiver.
My key requirement is that I want in-wall speakers. After doing some research I believe the RT series are well suited to this?
I happened upon an ebay sale for 1 x 255c-RT, 2 x 265-RT & 2 x 65-RT and didn't have any time to stop and think as the sale was about to finish.
Now that I have received the speakers I find they are a lot bigger than I expected.
So before I go cutting huge holes in my walls I have two questions.
1 - Are these speakers overkill and should I be looking to get something different (e.g. Use the 65-RT at the front and get smaller speakers for the back)?
2 - If I want to add two ceiling speakers for Atmos would the 70-RT be a good choice (I want the ceiling speakers to be as small as possible to be easy on the eye)?

Pretty big room. Big rooms need big speakers. You can paint the grills to match the walls/ceiling.

Yep, I'm planning to paint them, they still will be very noticeable though. Any ideas or suggestions regarding the 70-RT for ceiling speakers? Do you know if they have a wide enough dispersion?

They will match up fine. Should work well. Place them about 3 feet or so in front of the main listening position, and about 3 feet away from the walls.

May want to consider going 5.x.4. Looks you may have about 5 or 6 feet behind the couch. Drop the rears about 2 feet back, and that should work great.

I assume you mean 5.1.4 (Sorry I don't know all the terms used in this industry)? I wanted to go 5.1.4 but I am pushing to get my wife to let me put 2 speakers in the ceililng let alone 4. Plus the Integra DRX-3 receiver only goes to 5.1.2 and I am reaching the end of my budget.
Thanks for all the help

A little off topic, but just a little. Can someone explain to me why they want sound coming from above? Other than birds, planes and helicopters there's nothing up there making noise.

It's an immersive sound. Marantz had a portable theater at Cedia last year and played a seen from Saw movie where a person was in a water tank filling with water. You actually could here the scenario as if you were in the tank.

  • @F1nut I suppose it doesn't come into play that often, there are times though, say for instance footsteps or noise in the next story up. Would be cool watching a horror movie and having it sound like someone is walking above you  Or a helicopter flying around in an action movie, or something exploding above you, or a missile going over head... The list goes on.

Ok so what's next, speakers in the floor? Not trying to be difficult, but IMO, it's getting pretty nutty. Someone wants immersive, pop on some headphones and call it a day.

For that room, I would say they are definitely not overkill. I am pretty sure we were hearing these very same speakers Saturday at Johns' house, and they sounded fantastic. Look at it this way, it's better to have some headroom left over than to overtax a smaller speaker into playing at volumes higher than they're capable of.

As for the ceiling speakers, I can't comment other than to say, first get the 5.1 setup running and see how you like it. You may be pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds as is.

So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

  • @polrbehr Thanks for the great information. Very happy that I have not overdone it. That makes complete sense too, better to go slightly over board than ending up with speakers too small for the room.
Regarding the ceiling speakers, I actually found a pair of the 70RT being sold on eBay for 1/3 the retail price from an audio store (that I think has gone bust), they were using them in a demo room as Atmos surround speakers so it seems they will be perfect. Picked them up for $150AU each (RRP in Australia is $450 each).

Same goes for amplifier power, it's always better to have more power available than you think you'll need. Welcome to the club, by the way (a/k/a the rabbit hole), keep posting updates as you acquire new items.
