Any thoughts on the Denon 6300H AVR and pair of A9's?

Hello! I'm brand new to the forums and I figured I'd jump right in and introduce myself and ask a couple of questions :)

I am in the process of upgrading my sound system. Just bought a house and my sound system took a back seat for a while. The brand spanking new Denon 6300H has caught my eye and I recently picked up a pair of RTI A9's for my fronts (Far cry from the Polk Monitor 1's they replaced lol). I have a large Polk center channel and medium bookshelf Polk surrounds as well (sorry can't recall model numbers at the moment, I'll update the post with them in the morning).

I have a brand spanking new behemoth of a subwoofer Klipsch R-115W and an older 10" Polk sub I'm still deciding what to do with. I also just picked up a pair of Klipsch Atmos speakers (RP-140SA) in preparation for my new receiver.

I plan on pushing truehd and Atmos audio through this setup, as well as leveraging the HEOS throughout the rest of my house. Depending on how well my two Atmos speakers do now I may pickup another pair. I'm also picking up all brand new 12AWG wire from mediabridge it's their white oxygen free copper product.

I have heard that the A9's only really shine with an Amp, I wanted to know what amp is recommended. Let's hear the top of the line answer to that and the middle of the road answer lol I know prices can be insane. Realistically, for the right results, I may be willing to spend ~$1,300 on an amp.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts! Thanks!

P.S. I'm sure I missed some details so feel free to ask :)

That price will get you a fine Parasound amp. Sunfire also comes to mind.
  • Thanks for the quick reply pitdogg2.
I saw another thread going on about how well Parasound amps pair with he A9s. Any thoughts on that?

  • Hahaha, I suppose I DID ask for the top end lol totally didn't expect that. Jeeeez! What the heck would you REALLY need a $52,000 or a $2,200,000 amp for?! Just crazy!

Now what do you guys realistically recommend?

There is no such top of the line animal with a budget of 1300 bucks. There is only good sound quality for the buck and what gells well with your system and preferences. Parasound, B&k, Sunfire should be up your alley and sound good with those speakers.

That said, I'd also reconsider your cable choice. Unless you like ice picks in your ears. lol Look at some Kimber, Wireworld, Analysis plus, Acoustic zen, MIT, and if your on a budget.....Gregg Strailey Reality cables. Check the used markets, that's where the deals are. Hifi shark....US Audiomart, here in the FM, Audiogon, or your local craigslist.

  • Oh I'm totally not expecting the top of the line amps to be in the ~$1,300 price range by any means. I'm expecting something that sounds good with movies.

I'm by no means an audiophile, I LOVE MOVIES! I will be setting up my first Atmos system and am interested in making sure my A9's sound as good as they can. I will eventually upgrade my center and rears.

  • Ok thanks! Will do.
I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to audio systems. Computer systems and automation, I'm your guy, but not audio.

I'm having a hard time getting a grasp on how much wattage I should be pushing to my A9's, and what amps adverise as putting out vs how much they really deliver per channel.

Reading reviews and forums has my head spinning in circles lol.

Most of my system is made up of used gear. I've found that when you get to a certain price point, used gear is almost always like new.

  • Thanks for the great feedback so far guys!

Especially Irrenhaus for the very specific make and model recommendations. I'll certainly be looking into those two.

Reading on the A9 specs, it says it accepts Wattage up to 500 Watts per speaker. Should I be trying to match that with the amp I get? Is closer to 500 watts but not over better? So 250 Watt per channel stereo amp vs 500 Watt per channel stereo amp, I should go for the 500 Watts?

any downside to meeting that top end spec? From what I've read more headroom is better it seems.

    Thanks again!!! :D

Those particular specs mean little. Plus you'll never find a good amp with 500 watts per channel for your price range anyway.

Pay little attention to watts, what you want is current, as in amperes peak to peak. Most amps in the advertised 200 + watts per channel area should have the current to drive those speakers nicely.

That receiver is one of Denons best, and newest. If your main goal is movies then that should do you well.

Don't forget too, you'll need a pair of RCA interconnect cables to hook up the amp to the receiver. Don't go too cheap on those either. Look at the same brands I mentioned for speaker cables, and throw the Audioquest brand in there also.

    Welcom SirAce!

Parasound, B&K, Sunfire - all great recommendations as good "bang-for-your-buck" amps for HT. I'd also add Rotel to the list. I've owned all but the Sunfire. I did have a Carver that I wasn't too fond of the sound (a tad too bright for my ears), but can't speak for the Sunfire.

I will say that to me, Parasound and B&K are very similar sounding - a bit on the warm side. The Rotel was very neutral, and did an excellent job as well.

Lots of good advice and experience on this forum. I'd definitely second/third/etc. the advice to NOT shy away from used gear. Just about all of my equipment in my HT was bought used. You can get a LOT of gear for a fraction of the new prices. Just do your homework and make sure it functions properly and was well cared for. Good luck!
  • SirAce,

I have the RTi12s for fronts, and RTi6s as surrounds, with the CSi A6 center. Outlaw LFM-1EX sub. And the 30 year old Yamaha M-65 amp (170 wpc) does an outstanding job of powering the 12s, with my Yamaha RX-A2030 handling the rest.

All in about 7000 cubic feet. My Yammie cost me $250, BTW.

Best of luck. You already have made some good equipment decisions!

  • I paired my a9 with a b&k amp off the recommendation from our fellow polkies and I've had no regrets thus far.

Bedroom consist of NHT model 2 powered by Parasound hca1200ii coming from my computer.

Stuff laying around. Too much to list but don't want to sell either.
