POlk 10B clipping /distortion

Hello Forum I recently purchased this set and they sound amazing with cd and music dvds. They are driven by a Denon 2312CI receiver I recently noticed on a movie soundtrack that when explosions occur the left speaker starts to pop/distort/clip. I played Private Ryan but it wasnt that bad The speakers were made in 1990 and have SL 2000 tweeters Mexican made drivers
I switched the tweeters and the problem still existed on the speaker.

Do I need to replace the XO and or get new tweeters? Can i dsiconnect the tweeter to see if the problem still exists

Thanks

Also make sure the speakers are set to small, they really can't take a saving private ryan action scene bass wise.

In addition to the above, you may have a damaged driver in the left speaker.

Too much volume? Do you have the bass cranked up? Any sort of loudness switch?

Thanks to all for your input I will adjust the speakers to small and see if it helps I have a B& W sub woofer that should help If I had to replace the drivers, what should I buy? Does polk have better replacements? Or use another brand. Should I also change the xo first?

Swap the right and left speakers, then play the movie. If the popping stays with the now right speaker you likely have a driver with a weak/damaged spider. That driver will have to be replaced. The model number is stamped on the back of the driver.

You will want to determine if the drivers are indeed damaged. You can LIGHTLY press on the drivers and listen to see if there is any noises or scratches. You can also lightly tap on your driver, if it sounds like a drum then you are good, if it cracks or makes odd noises it's busted.

Update Found that the receivers settings for the speakers were way off It had all speakers set at 12DB! The settings are 0-12 So the speakers were getting way to much power I set them back to zero and the problem is now gone. I never checked this when I set up the mic to have the receiver adjusted this automatically when the mic was used. It just shows how tough this speaker was built No damage done and sounds great. With this in mind, would upgrading the xo and or new upgraded tweeters be the next step to get another 26 years out of them ?
