I have a set of Polk SDA-SRS that I have connected to a old Pioneer Spec system that sound great! I bought a newer Yamaha receiver amp for the TV concerts and want to run to the speakers, BUT when i use a speaker switcher, it takes away power ot the speakers from the old Spec system. Can i run 2 separate sets of wire from each reciever to the speakers together without damaging either of the amp systems or/ the speakers?

not a good idea IMHO. signal will try to flow to the other receiver

Short answer -- use a switch.
make sure it is "non-shorting", if it is a multi-position switch, get one that with "break before make" to ensure your amplifier never feels a short circuit if you switch sources "hot".
If you want to get fancy, you can go to something like this...
