Receiver purchase tips/hints/suggestions

Just received Polk Audio TL1600 5.1 as a gift, I'm super excited to get these set up, however I don't want to be cheap on a quality receiver but I also don't need every bell and whistle. The speakers will be used predominantly for sports and movies, playing music is secondary to me and isn't a priority. I was recommended by Crutchfield the Onkyo TX-NR646 but this is a 7.1 receiver at $399.00. If this is the best for the money I'll buy it (I like the Onkyo brand I've heard good things) but if that receiver is overkill for my plans with these speakers it will just be money wasted. I welcome any and all feedback. Thanks.

    I think you would be better off getting a Mid level Yamaha Aventage, or Marantz. The onkyo will do great but they seem to be a bit more problematic.

    Those Yamaha Aventage receivers are really nice as well, also more pricey. I guess what I'm getting at is what price range should a nice, quality receiver be for this system? The Onkyo is $400, the Yamaha's look like they start at $500, I was hoping to find something cheaper rather than more expensive but I will not go cheaper if its gonna affect sound quality and other features. I have the money to buy a $400-500 dollar receiver but if a $300-400 one does the same for what I need it to do thats a consideration as well.

    Check out the older Pioneer Elite series 80-94 you can find one under $200 online easy.
