Most of you know I'm looking for an inexpensive but reliable preamp w/ a working remote. I saw an ad on C/L that also included an amplifier that I didn't want and asked if he would part out the set and said ok andit was an Onkyo P-3160 and I know what your saying already "Lew you've had 2 of these and failed you and your going for another one "? Well the price including the remote was $50 and was a good looking unit. It was worth a look considering he was delivering it. I set up my gear w/ extention I/Cs to reach his device and all the inputs worked fine. I said now lets try the remote to make sure it all worked. Now after telling him I needed both phono inputs and related button on the remote there was none. The remote he had was not from this unit and did not have a phono button which really ticked me off. I even had an older Onkyo remote and tried that and it did not work. I told the guy the deal is off and said really look at your gear after telling me how much stuff he has and no remote action here. He started to pull the gear apart and I said don't touch anything until I power down which got his veins a showing, then pulled his unit and said w/ these parting words ,don't let the door hit you in the a%s on the way out.
Yes I could have maybe bought a universal remote or even the real one but I have little cash (wa wa wa ) and $50 was all I wanted for that piece. Now still using the Sony TD-ES2000 which does work and that's what I need..... Lew

Nothing surprises me anymore. Wish I had what you needed...

Ok, so the remote didn't work.....for 50 bucks you weren't expecting a like new component were ya ? lol
C'mon Lew, maybe the guy misrepresented the state of the remote, but a buyer beware situation, I dunno man. You could have easily picked up a working remote and still had a pre with remote for under 100 bucks, not bad in my book.HT SYSTEM-

100 bucks isn't blowing his budget when he was looking at pre's before in the 150 buck realm. Just putting things into perspective is all.
I know LEW is short on cash, and obviously wants the most he can for the least he can, with a remote. Takes time, patience....but I don't see a buyer beware situation here.HT SYSTEM-

I'm with Tony here.....$50 for a working, "good looking unit" that you get to hear on your own gear.......DELIVERED!
Definitely not a "buyer be aware" situation. -
I sold off a cheesy 30 dollar Kenwood preamp awhile back. It did a pretty good job & didnt sound too bad for 30 bucks. Perfect temporary pre..

Guys, I would have jumped on the thing. Remember there was a blackout the 1st attempt to do the deal and I reminded him of the phono button on the remote. He said yea yea it's on there don't worry. Next day happens and truth be told it looked like a $50 piece and my Dynaco from the 60]s looked in better shape. My air was on but it was like 900* which doesn't do well for a nice sit down deal and he was rushing and that bothered me. Clearly the remote he had was from some way newer unit than a P-3160 but that's ALL on him. If I didn't have 2 working preamps in the house I might have taken it and maybe left it at the $50 price. I was not going to buy something I know I'd be sorry after the fact. I think I'll stay away from Onkyos and look for another NAD 1020a w/ no remote or better yet a #162 a much better pre.
Tony and I talked about this, why do so freaking many remotes just walk away and disappear ??/2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Lew i got a mint Adcom preamp awhile back for 100 bucks on the bay. It had remote control & it had hook up for powered subwoofer output & i think it was a multi channel preamp. I hooked it to the Mcintosh & is worked pretty good for a budget preamp. In the end i sold it off & got all my money back because i bought the Parasound. If i happen to come across a local deal on a preamp i will let you know asap. Good luck on your search..

I have a few adcom pre's in mint condition two have a phono pre but no remote 1 has no phono preamp but has a remote go figure. I would part with one of them $100 shipped if interested one of them still has the original box.

Most of the Adcoms and Carvers for that matter I've seen have built in tuners. I do not need nor want this function. I get all my functions through my Yamaha RX-V-665 avr and it does well for it.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Just because it has a function you don't want, doesn't mean you have to use it.HT SYSTEM-

Tony if it has an am/fm built in tuner most will not have just a tuner input. My tuner input works my t.v.-i-net radio and i-pod dock. That's way better than any FM station around that I know about. All the so called classic rock stations play the exact rotations of years ago when they were using carts.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Take your time, learn to read people.
Most are not jerks and not out to rob people.
You will find what you want..be patient! -
The remote didn't meet his needs.. I wouldn't have bought it either..Some final words,
"If you keep banging your head against the wall,
you're going to have headaches."

They won't have a Tuner input, but doesn't mean you can't hook one up to an aux jack.HT SYSTEM-
