Question on Polk Rtia7

Hi guys! I have a set of Polk RtiA7 with a yamaha rx-a850 av receiver (100w per channel) i just bought a cerwin vega 900 power amp rated 210w rms@ 2 channel because the yamaha wasn't enough. My question now is how would you wired this? Just the cerwin vega running the rti's? Bi-amp (rxa850 for mids and cerwin for the 7"?) let me know what you think and if an upgrade to RtiA9 would be worth it or if my setup will be fine with my A7.

Thanks from a forum newbie :p

Is this for 2 channel or HT?

I'll assume you're assembling a HT system one step at a time.

Use the CV*amp full range to power your RTi A7s. Given its* 4 & 2 ohm ratings that amp/speaker combo should lift your house off the foundation w/out breaking a sweat! BTW: a little known but important detail - the 'A7s, and likely the '9s, are 4ohms below 125 & 120 hz respectively.
    * didn't know they made amps, only speakers

From there as you add speakers, power them w/your appropriate AVR channels though if you're goal is 7 channels or you have a lot of space to fill you may want to consider more amps. Along the way you'll need a good sub to handle the heavy lifting - no shortage of advice for that on this forum.

Sidenote - General forum consensus: pro gear isn't the first choice for SQ. By comparison it's typically more robust handling complex speaker loads while providing a higher "bang for the $" power ratio. But even the pricey stuff tends to "place behind" consumer on SQ.

    Enjoy! Tony

  • F1nut: Yes for now only 2 channel but will eventually add more speakers to make a HT but not this year lol i already spent enough hahaha...Thanks for the reply gp4jesus now that i know that it will lift the house off the foundation i will not feel bad having bought rtia7 instead of the 9's haha i thought the A7's were 8ohm thought so the cv would push 210w per channel @8 ohm :o or maybe i misunderstood, might be the case im pretty new to all that stuff :D any advice for an eventual sub/center/back? I have a medium-large open space

Ok, return the CV pro amp and buy nice sounding home amp. You'll want a warmer sounding amp for those speakers, something like Parasound or B&K.

  • Thanks for all the infos guys! So F1nut...how will the cv sound compare to a parasound? Will it be that bad? And which parasound or b&k should i buy?

+1 on Nbrowser's* speaker load. Allow me to add to his*: "back EMF" due to their mid & 2 bass drivers, the 'A9's 2 mids & 3 bass drivers. Please accept my apologies for the confusion concerning the 'A7s impedance curve.

Did you buy* the CV 900 new or are you the 2nd owner? If new*, can you return it for a full refund? (Hopefully w/out restocking fees) PM pending...

Let's take a '69 Chevelle SS 396. Lots of power and a blast to go WFO down the street. Lots of horsepower to get the beautiful hunk of steel going in a straight line. Then you try to do a road course maneuver. All that power is not so fun when the rear breaks loose.
Then you get behind the wheel of a BMW M5 sedan. Same HP rated on paper, BUT you can finesse that machine into turns and switchbacks. All while maintaining a nuanced balance of aggression and tire smoke.
    CV amp = '69 Chevelle
    A23 = M5

  • Hahaha allright i love us muscle car tho :D but yeah you are right...i forgot to mention im from canada so its 430 CAD + tax which is not bad at all

Ah, but it is all that bad when you consider it's the completely wrong amp for high fidelity.

    Jake,

What the guys are politely trying to tell you is that amp mated with RTIA speakers may put some ice pics in your ears. The RTIA series is a little hot on top and pro amps the same with added levels of noise /distortion. As the volume goes up, so may your discomfort.

Amps in general, are not bought so you can blast the speakers, if that's your line of thinking. If so, you should save some money for repairs to those speakers in the near future. Think of an amp in the same sense you would a garden hose with your thumb over the end. The amp removes the thumb and lets the music flow.

Sure, pro amps are cheap, some even look cool, and they have their place in audio too, just not in home audio. Right tool for the right job and all that.

Some amps you should be looking at that mate well with those speakers have already been mentioned. Parasound HCA series 1200 or 1500, can be had on the used markets for 350-500. Same goes for B&k amps, any of their 2 channel amps will do. Obviously there are others, but if your on a budget and you don't want to spend a lot on that muffler, those are the top 2 choices.

Forgot to mention: w/the 993* you'd be "sittin' on Go" when when you add a center channel.

Better, but like we said, Parasound or B&k would be about the best budget amp match.

    Jake,

    Sorry. Gotta go w/TonyB.

I've read several times over the past few years Rotel's class D amps don't quite "do it" like their class AB offerings.

If I locate the expert review I recently read I'll post the link. The author preferred the lower powered Rotel class AB amps (200 WPC I think) over his Rotel class D amp.

    Lunch is over. Tony

  • Why do they say 125w per channel and 150w per channel on the parasound website?
