I'm on the left/late coast...still suffering thru the endless commercials and hype before the opening ceremonies....

I'm watching the zika 100 meter, in which the participants try to outrun the mosquitos. And who could forget the open water 5k swim as the atheletes gain extra points for not swallowing syringes and fecal material.

These games scare me this time. So poor are the conditions down there that I worry for the safety of anyone going to participate in the games or watch them in person. What a great way for a pandemic to take root.

Some of the visuals for the opening ceremonies are kinda cool...then the dinero breaks ruin the flow.

What ever happened to uninterrupted coverage of the openings?

Absolutely.....which calls into question the mindset of those making these decisions. How about we have the next summer games in Antarctica ?

Excellent idea @tonyb, after the way they were ramrodding global warming down everyone's throats, I'm sure the Antarctic icecap will be melted by 2020...

So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

It's too bad the the money and politics have overshadowed the events themselves. I never really payed much attention until my oldest started swimming competitively on the same team in Atlanta as one of the Olympic swimmers. You see every day how hard these kids and people bust their rears at practice. I hope some day they can reform or get rid of all the negative politics surrounding the games and scale the whole thing back to focus more on the events and athletes. Just my .02.

Spot on Kev, why we constantly need that injected into every aspect of life is beyond me. Let the thrill of competition rule the day, that is what the games are suppose to be all about anyway.

Have you ever been there?...The whole area smells like a cesspool,no getting away from it..What the media will not show you behind all the glitz and glamour of the high rise scenes along the beaches are the Favelas...where the real population lives...typical third world sadness...

I have been to the Lake Placid and Montreal Olympics and had a wonderful memorable experience. Wish I could go to the Rio Olympics also. So many negative opinions from people. I wonder how many have gone? It is expensive however but worth it.
  • There is a slight difference this time, 'zappa, with the Rio Olympics.

In the Lake Placid Olympics, the only dangers involved were numerous cases of high blood pressure as the US hockey team beat the Russians. This occurred to both those who were in attendance at the game and to those who watching in the comfort of their homes.
In the Montreal Olympics, the main trouble resulted from people suffering from numerous cases of hyperglycemia. This was a direct result from the sweetness that participants and attendees were met with from the people of the host country. Yes, all the friendliness, helpfulness, good manners, and good-natured attitude of the entire country was just too much for those not familiar with those sorts of things. It was typical for blood sugars to spike to over 300 !
Yes, those peoples up there were up to their rascally ways even back in the 70's.

As to the Rio Olympics ? I am respectfully glad that you aren't able to attend. Watch it on tv and enjoy the commercials games ! :)

I'll ring in here, to be honest the Olympics just don't seem to enthuse me, after seeing the 5 ring circus roll into town in 2010 here in the Vancouver area...it really was a bit of a let down to be honest. They could come and go and I wouldn't notice too much.

Not to speak ill of the actual athletes that compete but the spirit of the Olympics has been lost over the years, look at the media, the advertising, the pros playing certain sports....yeah need I say more?

Not to speak of the convoy of semi's that are trucking loads of condoms to the Olympic Village....That's where the real games are,I think!...LMAO!..
