I buy all my stuff from www.newegg.com. Half the parts have free fedex shipping.

I see that most of the stuff on zipzoomfly have free 2nd day.. .I suppose that's even better :-). Haven't done any price comparisons... don't have the time right now. Maybe later today.

These are the places I have used with success in the past when building computers.

    www.newegg.com
    www.tcwo.com
    www.mwave.com
    www.crucial.com

New Egg is excellent, but Mwave for whatever reason has been my favorite. They have excellent customer service with quick email replies.

tcwo is local for me, just pick up what i need, so it works out best and i never go anywhere else.. shipping offsets any better deals as i can pick these up and do RMa's local, no shipping delays.. plus they stand behind everything they sell or the manufacturer offers great warranties.. I got a 3 year warranty for my motherboard.. i wont have this thing in 3 years so im golden..

I used to try and put together my own stuff, but got to annoyed having those stupid little problems with everything piece of hardware installed. Now I just go dell. I've had my P600 desktop for years now without a problem (just upgraded so my daughter has it now). I even used to lug the thing from Connecticut to New Jersey 3 times a week for over a year for a consulting gig.

But if you like trying to figure out those little problems, then save yourself a few bucks and build exactlly what you want, if you don't get yourself a dell.

Pablo - It's all relative really. We run Dell's at work, and they run like tops....anything can happen, it's just personal for me :)

386's are still running 20 years later, however a good number of those are long gone... parts just wear out.. lemons if you will sometimes.. I had the same power supply for 3 years... until last week.. who knows why it gave out??

You can have plenty of problems with computers made by large companies, too. We have a lab (25) of Gateway 1800 series computers that we put in a year and a half ago. Since then, well over half of those 25 machines have suffered PSU failure. Luckily, they're under warranty, so it's no loss to us, except for the downtime.

We also bought around 30 MSI SlimPC barebone systems (came with case, PSU, and motherboard). Since then, we've sent 24 motherboards in under warranty due to faulty capacitors (you can read about the bad caps problem on www.badcaps.com ). Again, good thing it's under warranty.

In the past, we've had Gateway 3200 series PCs. I can't even tell you how many of those had hard drive failure because for some unknown reason, a chip on the HD would burn up. Just goes to show you that prepackaged PCs are not exempt from problems.

This year, we bought around 275 dell Optiplex GX260 workstations. So far, we haven't been able to tell if there's going to be a common component failure. We've had monitors, HDs, and motherboards fail, but there's no known pattern yet. I guess time will tell...

On the other side, I've been building computers for 6 out of the 17 years of my life. The first ones I built were pretty bad, but they were great to learn on. They were unstable, and would crash a lot, but they still ran. Now, I can build systems that run without a day off for longer than I can. My current record is a relatively low 55 days straight. The machine I use every day has been up for 14 days straight. So don't go saying that if you build your own, it's going to have problems.... that's just not true!

The first computer I built is a dual pIII server board in a rack mount chassis, Its running FreeBSD 4.9 Stable. Its been up without reboot for over 7 months.

Oh yeah http://www.teapottraveler.com is whats running on it

Built a second one just like it, Although its not running now, no use for it.

Heres one for longevity of hardware.

A friend gave his moms old compaq, she wanted it out of the house. Came with all the paperwork. $2000 in 1994. 1/2 gig hd 4mgs ram running windows 3.1 Works perfectly.

Faster100, I've often seen 12V fans that would not spin with even as much as 7VDC applied. Not suggesting your power supply is good but that failure of a fan to move on anything but 12V output may not mean anything. Slap a voltmeter on the red to black and see what you get with the PSU jumpered. Put a fan or something on another connector while you do it.

Did you try a new battery?

Sorry if all this is too little, too late but I feel your pain.
    Whut?
