THE Component MP3 Player to Buy

Several years ago the Polk Forums were pretty helpful to me in updating my sound system (only original parts are my Monitor 10A speakers). So I thought to take the time to pass this on.

Several months ago I purchased Voyetra's Audiotron component MP3 player. ( http://www.turtlebeach.com/site/ )This is a LAN based head end (RCA and optical outs) that looks like a tuner (flourescent display, nice controls). It networks to your computer so you can play your MP3's through your sound system. Easy and well explained installation.

Good remote control too. If you have a broadband connection, you can even play Internet radio (I have dial up and like the install book sez, don't bother)

Mine cost me $235 (free ship) from Newegg.com; I believe Voyetra just dropped the price on their site to $200 plus around $15 ship.

This includes a full version of Voyetra's Audiostation. AS is not needed to run the Audiotron, but AS can create a table of contents that the Audiotron can use for faster startup.

The Audiotron is located 100 feet from computer. Playback is perfect, even when my kid is playing MP3s on her computer and I am on the Internet.

Just for kicks, I will also tell you I just added Buffalo Technology's Link Station. ( http://www.buffalotech.com/wireless/products/NetworkProducts/HDH120LAN.html )This is a 120GB network attached storage device that can also take add a USB HDD. This cost me $250 (includes a rebate) and got the Cnet editor's choice last month.

I bought this to take the load off my comuter hard drive. While I keep my computer on 24 hrs/day, the NAS enables those who do prefer to turn off their computer to access their MP3s even with the computer off.

So, for under $500, you can have a true MP3 component plus the storage. BTW, I rip at 320kps and have 4,000 tracks taking up 40GB.

All works smoothly (God I remember ganging Sony 300 disc CD players) and I can't believe how easy it is to access my music.

I don't even own stock in these companies; just a payback to the forum.

hmmmmm.....for $34.95 I got a 20 foot cable to run from my audio out port on my laptop to the back of my receiver that does the same thing. I have no qualms about leaving my computer on to listen to internet radio and my mp3's personally.

Sounds interesting though.....just not for my tastes.

I love mine, but I don't have the new wireless one. It's the bomb diggity! Crystal D/A converters, so it sounds real good as well.

    Steve,

I had considered that device; but the Audiotron won out because of its flexibility and styling. Since it is component sized it has room for standard CD/Tape recorder buttons on the panel. Also, you can access your music by playlist, genre, album, artist or track (and in nested order to boot) as well as from the unit (or remote). It sits on top of one of my Monitor 10s (original owner which dates me for sure) and is the only component left in view. Of course, this is so I can choose the music I want to play without having to open the "closet door".

Price was about the same so I went with the one I thought more flexible. I rejected Audiotron (and Slim) wireless since I am already wired for LAN.

Slim, Audiotron, Marantz; it sure does change the way you deal with music.
