A local gentlemen has these for sale and claims they are about 9 years old. Didn't they stop making the monitor series around 1988? Also, I don't recognize the tweeter with the silver surround. They do look nice though.

May have been early 90's when the monitor line ceased to exsist, I demoed a pair of new monitor 10's in 92 on a road trip to our sons neurosurgeon. Those are 10's but I cannot remember the gen on them with that tweeter, looks to be about a second gen? There may be another with the proper year on these.

The tweeter is the dead giveaway on that one.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

So if that tweet's an SL1000, they must be an earlier version of the monitor 10? He wants $100 ea, but I think I can get the pair for $150. The cabinet in the pic looks mint. What do you guys think of the earlier monitor 10's? I just auditioned a pair of 10b's at my place for a week and they have very nice midrange and good but not great bass. Thanks.

I thought my 10's had ample amounts of bass, maybe room acoustics or another reason created the lack of bottm end. Russ, my 10'a had the peerless silk, did other first gen have the clear colored sl1000?

As far as I know, the 10a had the Peerless to start out, then ended up with the 1000 right before the 10b SL2000 was released. You can tell its not the 'early' 10a, because of the mid/pr costruction.

    Cheers,

It looks like they are the 10B's with the SL1000 tweeter. Does anyone have comments on the sound quality of these vs the earlier monitor 10's and 10A's? Thanks.

That pair of speakers is way older than 9 years...try like 25 years old. The polk logo is on the bottom of the speaker cabinet rather than the grills, and it uses fuses instead of thermal protection. Test the two the drivers for rubbing and then do a sonic test. An easy way to test the two mids is to gentley push the PR in (and out) and the mids should move freely. If the drivers are OK the speakers should sound great. The pair looks to be from 1979 or so. If they work 100% and the cabinets and grills are in good shape they are worth $150.00 . It also looks like the surrounds need some Armor all...the cones always stay nice and shiny even after 20+ years.:)

It's just that there's been some heated debates around here lately about the use of Armour All. I thought you may have known this and been making a joke. Personally, I have no opinion on it, so it doesn't matter to me.

They are the best Rock speakers I've had in my 43 years.

This looks EXACTLY like mine and my tweeters are dated 6/91.

    A STEAL at $150 man!

1979? Sure it's possible. It may just be a Franken-Polk.

I did pick up this pair for $150, and they do sound great. A friend has a pair of the monitor tens with the black tweeter, and these seem to have more bass than his. The highs are more forward on these as well. The gent I bought these from said he got them new and never changed the tweeter. From what I could tell, his memory could have been "influenced" in those days, lol.........

I actually got these for my brother's vintage system. I gave hime a twin powered HK 930 receiver for xmas this year, and I will say the vintage polks and HK's go to gether like peanut butter and jelly. The HK's have rich almost tube like bass so the passive radiatior works really well with these. Not boomy, but got quick tight bass. Nice speaks!

I have the orig. monitor 10's with the black tweeter. I was surprised when you said they lacked bass. I have mine run with a Bryston 2bLP and the bass is thunderous.

I think that they can compete with any speaker in the $800/pr range and win hands down.

You got to love vintage Polk . . . I sure do.
