Thinking about whole house surge protection

I'm considering whole house surge protection. Getting a new kitchen, HVAC is relatively new, and lots of audio equipment. What do you think? What would you recommend?

I got one installed in my circuit breaker box when I redid the wiring in my place a few years back. It wasn't that expensive IIRC. I also put in new ground rods.

Any recommendations regarding installation considerations/specific equipment/cost?
It surely seems like a prudent thing to do.Jim

The electrician did it but it was very easy as I recall. I'd have to look at the brand when I get home.

Do it.
I have one.
Got a fairly nice break on my home owner's insurance too when I told them I had one.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

This topic is a tad more complicated than just "whole house surge protection."
See here: http://www.stevejenkins.com/blog/2014/10/whats-the-best-whole-house-surge-protection/
Basically, there are three types of surge protectors.
1. Type 1: At the meter - these help keep lightning strikes and other surges out of your home by arresting the electricity at the feed entrance to the home. These are awesome, however many power companies will not let customers add anything to the power meter, effectively prohibiting this type of protection. In DC, BGE and Pepco charge you for this type of protection on a monthly basis and will not let you install it yourself. Not cool.
2. Type 2: At the panel - These help keep surges from getting past your panel and to your electronics. These can always be installed by electricians or enterprising homeowners as long as your panel has room. These work by creating a low resistance path from the service entrance to the surge protector, as which point the unit will take the hit or dying trying. They all fail eventually, but they will dutifully keep surges from outside the home from killing your stuff.
Coincidentally, I just installed one of these yesterday myself - my first real electrical DIY job. I used this unit: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Eaton-Whole-House-Surge-Protector-CHSPT2ULTRA-1/204761136
3. Type 3: At the plug - These are your conventional surge protectors, which are last defense actors and help prevent issues that originate inside the home.
The experts recommend, of course, a cascading approach. You have to determine what you are allowed, and willing to do yourself.
