My receiver is only 70 wpc x 5
it is a little underpowered. I have heard that i could use mono block amps to help drive the mains.. can someone tell me what they do? Will it boost the sound.. or are they just so your receiver doesn't have to work so hard to drive the speakers?
BTW i have a Marantz and I was looking at the Marantz mono block amps. What other choices do I have for amps? Is there an amp that if 5.1? that will boost all 5 channels?

Amp choices are many.....An amp will be a definate plus over the receiver amp. You can buy an amp with 1-5 (or more) channels. Many possiblilities depending on how much you want to spend.

i would recommend either marantz' mm9000 - 5x150W or go with the ma500 monoblocks 1x125 (need one for each channel). the benefit of the monoblock over the mm9000 is that it has it's own power supply, of course you will pay for this... the mm9000 can be had for under $1000. i think ac4l.com has these factory certified refurbished for like $660 or something. either way, you'll be getting better sound then using the built in amp in your reciver. you running a sr5000???

Yeah Juice21, I am running the SR5000 and it's underpowered.. i have to crank it up to between 60 and 70 on the volume dial to get some decent levels out of the RT800i's and the rest of the speaker systems. I really think I should go with the mono blocks.. because the mains seem to be the only real speakers that are lacking power.
    hey thanks for your help!

yeah, the mm9000 would do a quick-fix for you, but i think you would really be impressed with the monoblocks, and the nice thing is, you can upgrade as you can spare a couple hundered extra at a time. stereo front's first, then center, then rear's. then, if you want to get really nuts, do it all again and bridge them 2 /channel for 260+ or so watts!!!:D
