Coup in Turkey

It looks like the army in Turkey might have taken power from Erdogan. Maybe it marks a return to secularism for the country? What do you guys think? Pretty big deal right now with that region as it currently is.

    @nooshinjohn I respect your self-restraint (and awareness).

    Looks like not much of a conversation to be had anyway: Erdogan is back in Istanbul. Seems the coup is ended. They didn't have a tight enough grip I guess?

    As someone who spent time in Turkey as a NATO US Army soldier, I'm surprised Erdogan has lasted this long. Turkey "was" a very advanced country in a social way, and embraced Western culture. Attaturk would not be happy with the current (muslim brotherhood) President.

    Mark my words: Erdogan will go. Maybe not this time, but he'll go. That will be a great thing for Turkey.

    @kevhed72 good point. Looks like we erred on the side of caution this time around, with Obama's speech "supporting the democratically elected government." It would seem that, for all his Islamism, Erdogan enjoys pretty broad support throughout Turkey.

    @steveinaz it's great to hear your perspective. I agree: Erdogan will probably go sooner or later, and if he doesn't, much of his work could be reversed by his successor. Although, he does have a lot of support, so it's tough to tell at this point. His conference call via FaceTime gave me a good laugh though, especially considering his disdain for the use of such technology.
