12 VDC Linear Power Supply

I am building a 12 VDC linear power supply to replace the wall wart that came with my fanless Windows 10 computer (Quantum Byte).
I bought a open frame power supply and a case to house it.
I had planned to use an IEC inlet with a 3 prong cord and ground the power supply frame.
Is this correct or should I just use a polarized 2 prong cord with no ground?

Trial and error method. If you get noise or feedback, just remove the chassis ground.
Looks like it's designed for a non ground two wire input from the looks of the line voltage block taps.

    Thanks lightman1.

I got the case in today.
I am going to paint it if I can find some black paint. B)

Definately, for your own protection I would use the IEC and connect the safety ground to the chassis.
Also I would be sure the ac input is fuse protected in case of a failure in the supply.

Good point. Check if the power input is fuse protected. I didn't see any in the pics. But it might be in the supply input block.

Nope. No fuses for the input side of the TX. Safety first.

Their website has a chart with fuse values. I will definitely add a fuse block.
    Thanks

I have completed the case. Going to finish the 12v cable tomorrow.
After testing I think I will paint the outside black and line the inside with Dynamat.

Nice work! I like Rust-Oleum Black purchased from a hardware store. Once it dries thoroughly you can sand and buff it out and wax it if you want.

I always thought linear needed more letters to sound more linear....

Oh, I am serious about the paint and you can buy it wherever you want. ;)

I finished my power supply. Painted black with Dynamat.

The output voltage at the end of the cable is 12.04 vdc. I turned the volume up and there is zero hum. After running at load for a couple of hours the case is cool as a cucumber. I got rid of the wall wart that came with the Quantum Byte computer.

The sound is improved with the linear.
Bass is very solid with more impact, more layered with some mid bass growl that I have never noticed before.
The highs are smoother. I have one recording that is shrill and always runs me out of the room and last night I was able to enjoy it.
Imaging is great as usual and seems more layered in depth.

Compared to the Marantz optical disc drive it is very close and with some recordings I may prefer the computer.

There is no doubt in my mind that going fanless, cleaning up input power, usb power and using ss drives all have a cumulative and positive impact on computer generated music.

I upgraded my DIY linear power supply to a Mojo Audio Joule v5.0.
Feeding my Quantum Byte it's outstanding.

    x7n9ck5m33g8.jpg

Along with my recent power circuitry upgrades this pushes my system to another level. Quieter, better dynamics, smooth, fast, wide, deep with great imaging. If I did not know where the speakers are located I could not point to them.

I am grinning from ear to ear B)
