Oppo 105D as a BD Player/DAC/Streamer?

This journey started as a quest to find a DAC which betters the one in my Parasound P5. I quickly found myself in the $500 & up price range, which then lead me to consider an Oppo 105D to serve as a DAC & also replace my existing BD player, a Denon dbt-1713ud, & the Pioneer N-50 I use to stream from my NAS. Who's using one to take the place of 3 components? I guess my biggest concern is that UHD BD players are coming soon, then what? I've heard rumors of an Oppo UHD BD player but nothing about how it would compare audio wise to the 105.

Thoughts?

There is no reason to believe an OPPO UHD BD player would be better than the current line-up for audio purposes. UHD Blu Ray provides higher resolution visual resolution but does nothing for audio as it sticks with the same formats. It could also be that a UHD BD drive is not compatible with SACD, but it's too early for rumors on that.

I did love my oppo 105, as skip mentions it's a great player for all of its features. I was never wowed by its audio performance, via the built in DAC, or its sacd capabilities. I also used it as a preamp and again was not very impressed.

I haven't spun an actual CD in years. They're all burned to FLAC on the NAS. My Denon does SA-CD & DVD-A plus I don't really do enough SACD to justify the Marantz over a pure DAC. One piece of info I left out is this will be for a combined 2 channel/HT system.

Kind of surprised by the meh comments on the Oppo audio quality. Pretty sure I've read about some of you declaring the 105 DAC to be the bomb not too long ago. I'm sure it'd be a step up from what I currently have.

Well I "only" have a BDP-103 which I purchased before the Darby edotions came out. However the thing is a streaming BEAST! Movies and music-wise it even plays anything that my Playstation 3 slim won't play. It also streams DSD from my NAS hard drive through SMB (Serial Messenger Block)
The 105 and 105D have the exact same capabilities as the 103.

I heard that the Oppo UHD won't be released until late 2017, and that they will lack analog outs. I will just get a stand alone UHD player instead of selling the 105D I need the analog outs. I think you should get one there is nothing wrong with the 105Ds DAC, however it is bested by my Marantz which costs more.

I just sold my 105D, bought a used Marantz UD player and put the rest of the cash in my pocket. The Marantz so far does a fine job. But I wasn't using the oppo to its full potential anymore.

Wish Oppo would build a unit minus the video features.

The video circuitry can be turned off on most universal players for slightly better analog audio performance. Oppo has a DAC/headphone amp/preamp which costs $1200 just by itself. I consider the 105D a relative bargain for all it can do. I agree they could make a good standalone SACD player with DAC capability though if they wanted to. But, there is little reason for them to do that as their DAC and Blu Ray players play back DSD files.

What do you feel the short comings with the 105D were? Other than not using it to it's potential?

It was a good all around player. But, put head to head with my shanling, playing only regular CDs, blew the 105 out of the water in every aspect playing sacds. The DAC was pretty good, but again, I was never wowed by it. This player had rave reviews for its anolog capabilities, and honestly I didn't think they were as good as their reviews.

The strongpoint of this player is its DAC, network capabilities, And video processing. I don't use any of these. The system it was in was mainly movies, and the only music would be bluray concerts and dvd audio, So the 105 was being wasted there. I stuck it in my 2 channel system for a few days and was nothing but disappointment. As an all around player yeah it does a good job if you want all these features in one box.

In stock form, I found the 105 to be equivalent to a Marantz SA8004 but definitely different in presentation with the Oppo being brighter, more detailed and more lively while the Marantz was smoother and overall more pleasant to listen to on already bright speakers. The 105 did work better with my preamp because it has balanced outputs and my preamp works better with its balanced inputs (higher gain than unbalanced). Modwright does a $2500 modification to the 105 which includes an outboard power supply and tubed circuits. That mod may put it more on par price and performance wise with a modified Shanling CD player. I haven't heard one of those modified 105s myself, but also don't see the long term value in me paying for modifications to a stock piece of audio gear. I do see plenty of value in buying something that a previous owner has paid to have modified though. Like a lot of others I no longer spin CDs at all and only keep an audio disc player around for SACD.
