Headroom on my amp...help me understand it.

So I picked up a CD player yesterday (as I bought Prince's greatest hits recently) once I got it all set up I realized the output is MUCH greater than that of my Ipad 3.5mm to RCA input. I wouldn't want to turn the dial past 8/9 o clock with the CD player, 11/12 o clock with the Ipad.
This makes me wonder about head room on my amp, I listen to what I read on here and don't go past 12 o clock on my volume knob. My questions is since the output signal from the Ipad is quite a bit lower than my CD player would the same rules apply?
Is this based off of a set amount of volume on the amplifier or does it depend on the source?

It's dependent on the input voltage of the source, the mastering, the pre amp, the amp and the speakers. The 12 noon limit is a general guideline because most of the time it is true.Political Correctness'.........defined
