... Speaker show down coming. For those over 60.
Remember the "Good Ole Days" of ROCK audio in the 60's and 70"
- the Golden Age !!
... just scored a pair of Pioneer HTM 100b's. 200 watt version.
I used JBL 100 Century's for years , way back when. It was the 70's and "Rock" ruled.
Over the years my taste in music CHANGED. Moved to the "Mellower" side. Jazz and Vocals.
Traded in for a lot:
Polk Sda , DCM Time Windows and Maggies MG I's. , all ole school sound. (Plus many more)
The keepers til now where the Maggie MG I's refurbished. talking about under $500.00"
The Maggies are a unique speaker not lved by all. You need a sub to complete the experience.
BUT , .... the Maggies give more of the presence of the MUSIC.
The Maggies fail at OLE ROCK
...... NOW, in a few short days, I will have some of my all time favorites to compare.
For the full experience of a bygone era. you need the right components.
Deferent kind of speaker needed. One with deeper continuous LOWS, at high volume.
Welcome ROCK of the 60's & 70's.
Rock Music of this era was engineered on JBL 100's in the studios. The same Designer of the advanced Pioneer HTM 100's
He left to work for Pioneer AND THEIR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY to create the new and improved version """ Pioneer HPM 100B" with 200 watt versions.
Gotta Luv Retirement !!!

Nice, hope they are all you hope, I too went the time windows route for a while, last ones were a nice set of tw3s.
My sda 1cs will never leve the house, love em, and they are easy on my old ears for a speaker that can rock or play with great nuance even at low volume.
If you can please post a pic or two and your impressions.humpty dumpty was pushed -
Forgot to add that I scored a pair of DCM Time Windows from Ebay that will be delivered in a few days. The test will be in the present. Of course by 67 year ole ears can't produce a honest comparison.
-
I was lucky to come across a pair of JBL 120 Ti's a year ago..One owner and kept in a studio environment ...they still pump the SPL's....sound harkens to a different time...free and easy!..
-
... for you Youngsters out there, here are pictures of these Classic speakers.

.... guaranteed at our age you will never move those suckers. Heavy weights. Everyone has their favorite speakers . Most, based on quality of sound. Their is also a second reason for choosing....... those good ole memories of better days past. Oh !!! to be young again with all the MODERN audio "STUFF" out there. -
... to add to the pot of classic. The JBL L100's. Was used in most STUDIOS back in the Golden Era to edit MUSIC. A must try speaker.

as the folks at and from Georgetown U like to say, "Hoya saxa!"
(what rocks)
The DCM timewindows pictured earlier, imo and fwiw: great loudspeakers.
The HPM-100s? Not so much.
de gustibus non est disputandum, though...
-
PS it's not like loudspeakers on the lines of Magneplanars or Polk Audio SDAs are incapable of good rock and roll reproduction -- they just will need lots and lots and lots of power.
There are a couple of pathways to good dynamics: one require lots of power, another one doesn't... but it does require a lot from the loudspeakers used.
... and before there were JBL-100s, there were Altec Duplexes :-)

I had dcm tw originals as picture, also some tw 1as, which to mine and debs ears were the bomb, almost sda like in their soundstage and depth of field, unfortunately, the damaged finish on the wooden tops from shipping made me get a refund, thinking I would just find another pair which I never could.
the tw3s were an unmitigated disappointment even after a professionally done recap.humpty dumpty was pushed -
I remember how popular the A-7's were, just never had the money to buy them, lol.
-
... just got the time Windows delivered. The sender did a great job packing considering their odd shape. He wrapped multiple layers of cardboard around them and a whole spool of packing tape on each. Took a half hour to get to the prize inside. Also FedX did a great job in shipping. No noticeable tears or scrapes on package. Yeh!!!
These are the original 1's without the rod in the center. Temporarily I have then hooked up to a cheap hybrid Tube integrated amp (like below)
http://www.amazon.com/Nobsound®-MS-10D-Amplifier-Excellent-110v/product-reviews/B00KFGKKR2/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm/180-1795653-8385739?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending
... its been 15 years since I heard a pair. Have to admit they still sound AWESOME, even when totally under powered with this cheap amp. What appeals to me is how SWEET the upper end is. These Philip tweeters are now 45 years old and are still going strong. Even the base with the low powered amp sounds fantastic. Definitely need more power. Have this amp at 3/4's volume and it is quite loud....but pushing it.
Have to wait to tear apart my old system to hook up my British Fidelity A170 amp. But in the mean time it is nice to have an old friend in the house.

Yes, IMO past the 1(a) model, they were too darned complex, I think (not... ahem... unlike some of the SDA models... umm, did I just say that out loud?)

A7s like these?
:-) -
... i believe he was talking about the Time Window 7's. Only about `1000 pair were made. See pic below: TW 1, 3 and 7.
.
I luv the shape of the original TW's. They make great pedestals for sculpture. Always wanted to do "Shabby Sheik ", removing grills and painting with "Granite Spray Paint" like below:
-
... A QUESTION for those in the know ??? How much do you loose in audio quality converting to different formats. Over the years I converted to varies formats. Early years in to heavily compressed . Later years reserved the best for flac.
Now in my LATER years !!! Wish I did it better. Lots of time converting from CD, so I am stuck, Have to admit most sound GOOD. Over 2000 cds at my finger tips. Check out "Albumplayer" software below:
http://www.albumplayer.com/
... for us ole timers that loved album and cd's and covers.
...got a love having a jukebox of all your music at your fingertips. Been selling off my cd collection.
...All i know is anything sounds better then my Godchildren's music over Bluetooth speakers or earbuds. -
