"As an aside, the days of suburban sprawl seem to be pretty much over -- the current generation want to live smack dab in the bustling city centers again... "

Absolutely Mark, know why ? Because they can't afford nuthin'...and priorities are a tad screwed up. It's all about partying....cell phones, drinking. Much the same way we were but the difference was we knew how to do it on the cheap and paid our own way. These days, kids want to live at home as long as they can to afford that lifestyle. Nobody wants to grow up anymore and become that dreaded "responsible adult".

This is a bit of an oversimplification. There are many reasons why people are moving back to the city, one being the increased desire to commute without suffering gridlock and a renewed focus on urban planning, including mass transit.

As for young people not being able to afford anything, well, things cost more than when you were a whippersnapper. Housing costs have gone up incredibly in many areas, as we have seen in 2009 and with a small resurgence since. A big issue, however, is higher education, which has suffered inflation nearly twice as high as other goods since the 1980s and now cost three times as much to attend as it did previously.

And young people need to go to college. Jobs that previously required a high school diploma are now increasingly reserved for college grads, and post-secondary education is now expected for higher level analytical professions as well. We simply don't have the manufacturing jobs that paid well and guaranteed health insurance that we did previously. As the car companies proved not too long ago, the old model wasn't sustainable. The result of all this is that a lot of well-intentioned youth end up taking educational loans to attend post-HS institutions (some good, some for-profit places that are criminally not-good) that cannot be discharged through bankruptcy or otherwise. When that happens, people start to move back in with their parents.

So it isn't all the alcohol and those durn smart phones.

Back on topic, as someone who does live in the 'burbs burt doesn't have a fence currently - I really like the PVC fence you have up. I'm surprised I don't see more of them around where I live.

Thems fences is expensive! Especially if you are going to enclose your backyard. I let Mother Nature provide my fence.

Additionally, if you get along with your neighbors, NOT fencing in an already small lot makes it feel a little bigger!

Nice work on the playhouse! And yeah, speaking from experience, it never ends... We've put two "additions" on my daughters' playhouse...

If we put up a fence here == the deer or the bears would likely breach it...

The problem with fences is they look like crap after awhile, need maintenance, and if all your neighbors buy different fences, it looks weird.

BTW Mark, moving to the city without suffering gridlock ? That's a new one, since traffic in the cities is horrendous, and public transportation is no better....and risky in the major cities. Takes you forever to get around and if time is of value to you, you won't find city living accommodating. Least here in Chicago anyway.

LOL, there's always that one guy, who waits for his neighbors to put up fences so he has to buy very little. Must be Italian too.

Here comes the pool. If you don't want a dirt ring around the inside, don't let Russ in it. :p

Luck is on your side. I had to make the heart breaking journey to the North Carolina coast today. Seems I'll be preoccupied here for a few weeks.
It's a tough row to hoe, but I'll persevere with dignity. ;)

They would have completed the job except who ever was responsible forgot to order the grout for the bottom of the pool under the liner. Monday afternoon or Tuesday it will be done.

My son dressed up in his construction gear. Both kids watched for hours. They even had a chance to sit in and "operate" the excavator. When they were not watching they were trying to replicate what was being done in their sandbox.

I hope your not thinking of paying for this pool with your expected Christmas bonus because I think we all know how that's going to turn out. :)

Pool is 80%ready. They are coming tonight to show me how much of what to add and how to operate the machines properly. I made some temp platforms with some scrap wood so we don't bring sand in it. Put some old entrance mats on them to ensure no slivers. Then I'll add some sod to the area facing the house so we stop dragging sand . We were in the pool last night with the kids had it to 84 turned it down to 80 before bed.

I have to say, i have honestly never seen something like that before and am quite intrigued. You have basically an inground pool in about 2 days time. And for a fraction of the cost.

It looks like there is a "shallow" section but how deep is it?

Shallow end is 3.5ft deep end is 6ft.

So, what exactly is this type of pool, in-ground? Will you eventually have a concrete patio around it, or will it be a deck? The top trim looks like that on an above-ground pool...

    I'm quite intrigued as well!

    Looking great!

Although misleading a bit, it's called a semi in ground. The first option was to have it stick out 2ft at the highest part of the yardd, we paid extra to have it at about 10-11 in at the highest point in the yard. It's about 16in at the lowest part. We are debating what we want to do, either finish it off in stone with some stone steps leading to the drop in steps or a 2 ft deck around the half facing us and finish the back with river rock and a couple of Japanese tall grass bunches
