    Pkquat,
Did you assemble the Hafler's ? I did. I think they sound pretty good for a 30 or more year old design. Somehow my DH-101 has survived the years with no issues other then needing to deox the RCA's and give the pots a shot. They are both very
" mod" friendly. Have you messed with yours, I haven't. First thing to go would be the old crappy RCA strip and install nice gold plated RCA's.

    Halifax,

Could you be more specific on the improvement going to NOS 6922's in your Budgie? Is it easily heard ? And what changes, smoother trebble etc. etc. ? Hopefully it's not something you have to strain to hear and even then you want to hear it so your brain says you do. I know it won't be like going from a 1960's transistor radio to my system now.

@Orangeman I did not assemble them. They are factory built, and I got them 2nd hand. I upgraded the RCA's on the amp, but never got a round to it on the pre-amp. I may do a board rebuild kit one day, maybe with a mod or two that are affordable and there is a consensus on the improvement. The major mods are the cost of a new amp. I have also read some mixed reviews about the two major mods, that while they are an improvement, they are not a major improvement for the price considering the cost of some newer high quality amps.

I am still rather impressed with mine. Its driven some hard loads without sweating, and given what I paid for it and its age, its not far off from newer amps that are considered better. IDK if it is just mine, but myself and others are impressed with how tight and rich the bass is.

I'm with you on the bass. There's something to be said for simple discreet transistor circuits, with a few IC's thown in. I have an Audio General 511A bare bones preamp made in the late 80's that had the discreet transistors individually voiced !
It reviewed up there with Mark Levinson etc. etc. of the day. It has all mil spec parts and sounds GREAT even if it is old. Just like my Nakamishi PA5 amp with the Nelson Pass Stasis circuit. Old stuff rocks for A LOT less then comparable new gear.
