This weekend me and spaz met at my house for some demo's of my new rotel gear, my new svs pb2 and his Monitor 7's and Hk avr20, it was real fun to try all the different gear and the old polks which i have never heard before..

we also has pauls Signal bi-wire which we didnt really get to analize because we hooked it right up before trying first with my cheap wire.. it had banana's and made it easier to change out gear..

We tried the M 7's on the rotel amp and pre, sound clean and clear and even at high volumes.. so we went ahead and used the HK avr20 for a pre, it actually was a bit fuller sounding... and then we tried the HK all by its own power, going from 65 wpc to 120 wasnt night and day and we concluded it wasnt that much of a difference to warrant an amp upgrade, however it was crisp and clear and maybe a bit more detailed with the Rotel amp.. this was measured about 6-7 feet away with an spl meter reading about 90 - 95 db...

I snapped a few pics of the speakers and gear..

we also demo'd the mighty Pb2, on jurrasic park3 and daredevil.. Paul i think was pretty impressed, but lets hope he doesnt catch the upgrade bug after this :D
we didnt get the meter out for this demo, but it was clear my small 12' room was so full of deep extensive bass it was overwheling and well into the 115+ db range im sure.. the back corner of my room has a solid wood door to the hallway and it was rattleing like crazy..

spaz brought his wife and baby which were a delight to have over as well, My wife and his had good conversation and my 20 month old girl was in love with thier boy... It was a fun few hours and we will be doing it again sometime soon, It's such a small world in the end they ended up knowing people that my wofe works with and worked with.. and they also have a relative a few streets away.. Small world...

I hope this encourages more polkies to meet and do this type of thing instead of all the fighting that go's on here... I hope you enjoyed the short thread here...

Good Time..Need to bring more beer next time :) Yeah the only advantage on the Rotel vs that HK20 was the Rotel was more crisp and clear sounding at higher levels. I'll wait Till i can get a Higher end Amp like say 400 Watts to really enjoy them :) I can only imagine that. Think i read Russman had his 7a's on a 500w 2chnl at the last Texas Gathering...OUCH! :) As far as the PB2 in that room, it was just SICK BASS. Feet bouncing on the floor bass. Great time and i encourage getting out there and meeting new Polkies.

PS let me know when you are ready to upgrade that sub ;)

    Spaz

    you betcha!! :D

we also finalized a deal on some speakers... paul got a set of Rti38's i bought from woody, I got pauls Rti28's in which i traded my brother in-law for his cherry 28's because he wanted all black speakers.. It all worked out smooth for everyone and this is the way transactions should go, we worked on this for about 2 weeks trying to find the speakers and get the exchange that made everyone happy.. Thanks again

The brand of amp seemed to make more of sound difference than the power behind it with the 7a's. I ran them for a LONG time with a single 60wpc Rotel, and it was nothing short of incredible. I pulled an identical 2nd Rotel out of the closet, and ran them bridged at 180wpc - the only difference was I didn't have to turn it up as much on the preamp.

At the gathering, we ran them on the Rotel's bridged to 180wpc, and on a single Carver M4.0T - I can't recall 350/ch?

Someone suggested running 2 M4.0's bridged on them, which would have been 1000wpc (if I'm not mistaken) - and I had to draw the line there. No friggin way, you just CAN'T get parts for the 7a anymore - I couldn't take the chance. Christ, it is *just* a 6.5" midwoof and a 1" tweet, you know?

The Rotel's I had great luck with were the RB960bx (little brother to the amp Faster has, but was considered the 'darling' of the series), a dual-mono 60wpc, that seem to go for $150-$225 depending on the market. I even used that single Rotel with a passive preamp, and STILL rarely hit high noon on the volume.

    Cheers,
    Russ

with this setup (rotel pre and amp) It seems i have to get towards 12 O clock on the volume to get real loud, but it's still clean and clear.. also set the HK at the same volume setting going into the rotel amp and powered with its own power and the HK was about a few db louder at the same volume setting and its 65wpc versus 120 of the Rotel so maybe it just takes more to get it going? I don't know... it seems to work fine though... The 6 " driver seems to pump alot more then i would like at higher volumes.... i would be afraid to damage it any higher, however maybe the more watts the cleaner it gets..

Close enough... 375 to be precise, tho. They also saw a little Sunfire time, as I recall, at 405 wpc, but much higher current capability. I remember them filling the rather large volume of your den amazingly well.

Of course this was all before they were autographed...
