Because it is an actual rubber, not a synthetic, it can dry out just a little over time. I have a pair here and after about 4 years I noticed a little white residue on it. Just the natural rubber drying out a bit. Any car care type conditioning product should get it back to its original if you spot that. You don't need to do it on the regular, but if you see any discoloration, that will take care of it.

Michael, that white residue can be cleaned off with original Windex. It's caused by oxidation, not because the rubber is drying out. The same butyl rubber was used on the Monitor and SDA speakers, which are still going strong 30+ years down the road.
In fact, the rubber around the engine on Ed's speakers showed some funky white marks, which I removed easily with Windex.Political Correctness'.........defined

Mine came out of the box with white powder on those rubber rings. Windex worked for me.2 channel:
