SDA CRS+ (pin & blade) tweeter upgrade....RD0194 or RD0198?

Hi all,

These SL2000 tweeters have got to go! I understand the RD0194 is the direct replacement, but the 198 is apparently a better tweeter, although needs cross over upgrades to use.

What's the consensus? Just whack in the 194s or do the cross over upgrade and use the 198?

Is there a step by step guide for upgrading the crossovers if that's the way to go?

Many thanks,

Mark

There are a ton of threads on this forum to help you with crossover upgrades on SDAs. Everything from mild to wild.

I think you'll find, with some research, that the TL mod utilizing RD0198 tweeters is only doable on the later model CRS+, called the 4.1TL mod I believe... Which model CRS+ do you have? Blade/blade IC or blade/pin? That's a good place to start.

Pretty sure some people have tackled the TL mod and 198s on blade/blade SDAs, but I got lost in some of the contradictions and ended up going with 194s in mine and a straight forward recap on the crossovers.

The general consensus is that the 198 is better than the 194, but both are leaps over the SL2000 and the spike.

I am not an expert on the CRS versions, but I believe the pin/blade versions can be upgraded based on the schematics.

Assuming there is only one tweeter, and it is the proper CRS model, you could just modify them for the 198, but people have been impressed with complete crossover rebuilds. If you go with upgrading the crossovers, Sonicaps are the preferred choice around here. @westmassguy can build them if you do not feel up to the task.

The modification for a 198 is known as the TL mod, SL3000 mod, 4.1TL mod. The schematic for the mod can be found here:

    Thanks mate. I have Pin/Blade.

You should be good to go on the TL mod with a few swaps on the crossovers. Should be plenty of threads on here that lay out the specifics.. Go for it man.

The TL mod is relatively simple, have at it and go for the 198's. Here's how I did mine:

Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I have tried both the 194s and 198s with my CRSs. The 194s are much better than the SL-2000s and easy to replace. If you really want to get the most out of your speakers though, the full 4.1TL mod takes these to a different level! Just make sure you use good caps. I had Solens installed at first and they sucked. In fact I prefer the stock caps with the 194s over the Solens with the 4.1 TL mod. I switched the caps out to Sonicaps and they sound heavenly now.

Thanks everyone for your great input and assistance. Sounds like the 198s and the 4.1 TL mod with Sonicaps is the way to go!

Better start practicing my soldering skills!

These were done by WMG & they sound excellent. Big difference over stock & i was using the 0194's with them & the 0198's are quite pleasing with the musical instruments i enjoy listening to.

    ^^^^^

Dave @westmassguy did the Same 4.1 TL Mod to my CRS+'s also and yes it took them to a whole new level :) And I did like the RDO-198's upgrade better then the 194's I had in there to start with.
