another way of using computer to t.v. ?

What I do right now is by using a VGA slitter at my 25 y/o Gateway desk top. Very cheap @ $5 w/ shipping by P/E and the cable also not that much, tie in computer monitor and run another long VGA cable to my t.v. It works and I get YOU-TUBE concerts and any content I want. Set the Toshiba input to PC and away we go. Now there will be a time when the Gateway will let go and I'll probably go get a lap top. If so and go the router way how does one tie into a t.v. w/ this set up ?
Remember I'm not the most computer literate dude here in the forum. ALERT-ALERT
Oh, this is very important. I find that many concerts and other content are not synced up w/ sound and action. Is there a setting to sync both of these up. This is happening now just right at my Gateway whether or not I use the big t.v. Toshiba is 40L22OOU
