Pardon me whilst I brag for a moment

Our son successfully defended his PhD thesis in mathematics at the University of Virginia this afternoon.
I am really, really proud of him!
Dissertation: “Pseudocompact C∗ -Algebras.”

(nope, I have no idea what that means!)

Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

Congratulations, Mr. Hardy, and congratulations to your son!

And like you, I have no idea what his dissertation is all about, but it sounds very impressive, to say the least!

However something tells me it has little to do with the algebra I learned in ninth grade.

Congratulations to your son, Mark! That's great. I hope his life in academia treats him "fairly". Academic politics and Administrative spinelessness can be formidable opponents. I wish him success in steering clear of the worst of these! Then again, there is always the private sector. The son of one of my closest friends was a double major in Math and Computer Science, he's now working for Google

    All the best!
