about Original Windex

Hi guys, I don't want to start any raging debate of what's to used to clean Polk cones and surrounds. Around here that would the highly and ONLY recommended Original Windex. This got me a bit confused when for giggles I looked up the ingredients of a bottle and sure enough was ammonium hydroxide, a form of ammonia used as a cleaning agent. I thought this would be the surround killer for some reason. Now I called Audio Classics years ago to ask them what they used to detail their gear before it goes out. My Adcom555 came slippery clean. They said they used this stuff off the shelf called Sprayway. I see that what's in there is no ammonia but a perfume grade of alcohol . Being the furthest thing from a chemist and this is where 'Doc' Mark Hardy might want to join in and see what the difference in products is and could it be used for Polk speaker inards like the world famous Original Windex. Believe me, not trying to rocking the boat here I just want to see if there are any other options out there. To be perfectly honest I use both OW for the speakers and Sprayway for my gear, plastic and metal combined. I have not dared tried to use it on my speakers. Not going to experiment w/ my 2Bs or M7s.

No Affiliation to Audio Classics, just a customer. Or to any product for that matter.

Amonium hydroxide is a base and at 10 on the pH scale. If the MW surrounds are indeed butyl compound then they withstand the NH4OH. However if the paper coating is indeed Si based, then it has a very slight reaction that sloughs off at the Molecular level every time it is applied.

I'm impressed but how does it compare from the Sprayway was really what I was getting at in my own rambling way.

I've personally never used Sprayway, but it's description says it contains perfume grade alcohol (but not the concentration). It therefore is ethyl alcohol and/or combination of isopropyl alcohol.. The reason why it is non-steaking is the complete evaporation of those compounds vs. the ammonia compound.

For butyl rubber surrounds, I've always used Armour all.
I just spray a little on a rag and work it gently around the surounds, wait a bit then wipe it off with a clean cloth.

There is nothing worse than Armor All, nothing! It attracts dirt/dust and even worse it causes the rubber to dry out unless you keep applying it.

Lew sprayway is a very foamy cleaner. I've used it it's cheap and in no way a better cleaner IMHO. It was the worst I've used for cleaning Windows.

I am amazed that anybody still uses Armor All.

I've used Armour All for years and have never had anything dry out or crack and don't re-apply it either, so I'll just have to believe what I've seen.

Well, all this spirited discussion got me curious, so off to google I went and it seems that everyone has something good or bad to say about everything pertaining to the treatment of Butyl rubber surrounds.
There were anti and pro ArmorAll folk both sure that they had the right idea.
There were actual chemists that said the Butyl rubber is tough and doesn't need rejuvenating, just a cleaning, some folks said no alcohol other said yes. (Windex has alcohol)
One of the more interesting ideas mentioned the use of citrus oils (from orange peel) as a natural conditioner, which is what the cleaner Simple Green is made from.
This statement intrigued me, because another person said that RC car racers use that product to make their car tires more supple to gain traction.
I chose to try a cloth dampened with Simple Green and it did indeed clean the surrounds nicely.
Will they rot away in a few years....................film at 11.

There still are double-bonds in the butyl compounds that are broken by intense UV and moreso by ozone. It's not indestructible. The brown tinge on some of them comes to mind.

Ivan, Your right in that Sprayway is very foamy and like I said is in an aerosol can as opposed to the squeeze trigger bottle style of OW. I don't spray either product directly on the gear but into rags, the spray is way to heavy and not controllable in any form. Sprayway does plastic and metal great and for windows I still have the Windex. For me it's going to be 2 products where it's a shame only one would of course be better. The ammonia in OW is not good for my plastic faced gear so that's why I would not use that.

I do have a question that does still pertain to this post. What do you guys use to clean your big screen t.v.s, and computer screens ?

In regards to tv and computer screen cleaning- I've found Radio Shack's- Nexxtech LCD/LED and Plasma screen cleaner works well with smudges and such and evaporates fast leaving no residue. It lists its ingredients as 96.3 distilled water+3% butoxyehanol+0.4 antistaic+0.3% essence. It frequently goes on sale for around $10 and comes with a high quality soft cleaning cloth

Lew for my plasma I use nothing but distilled water on a cotton baby diaper just damp not wet. It has served me very well. I hand wash in woolite it has never seen a wash machine. I hate those microfiber cloths as I've seen too many hold small grit that then goes on to scratch the next thing you use it on. My.02

I'll bring it up here since I was about to search it again. Original windex for cleaning the cones and the surrounds or does one of them needs something else? I picked up a pair of 5jr+'s that have dusty and literally dirty cones and . I think they were garage speaker, flea market specials, but work and actually sound really good.
