Might be looking for the $100 used phono preamp and the usual suspects are the NAD PP2 and the Rotel RQ970. Any reason to pick one over the other? As I recall the Audio Critic seemed to hold the RQ 970 in high regard. Had an NAD PP1 years ago and it was OK. Thanks

Gep,
My advice is to wait a little bit till you can find a used Lounge Audio LCR. They commonly go for $100-$150 used and sound WAY better than either of your two choices. If you want to save a little more you can get the LCR MK3, the newest version brand new for $299. I have one I use in a second system and the price to performance ratio is huge. It is very warm and rich sounding, while having good detail, excellent bass, good imaging, and good soundstage depth and width. If a moving magnet pre is all you need, it's hard to beat for the price.
Btw, the CRSs are really sounding good with the 4.1. TL mod. I did remove the polyswitches and used a straight jumper. It is a little hot like you said it would be but I just received some 0.39 ohm Mills resistors today so that problem should be taken care of. Thanks again! -
The PP2 add's an extra MC gain section and some minor power supply mods.Otherwise the MM section is near identical to PP1.
