Picked up a VTI BL 404, and expecting it to be delivered the end of this coming week. I've been using a tv stand for my components, which I payed about 60 bucks for. Pretty excited, as I've been looking for something affordable that looks nice.
I grabbed an extra 9" shelf to accommodate everything. And I like that i can expand it as needed.
What I want to do is fill it with sand. Anyone use kitty litter? I've been reading about this and has been recommended by some manufacturers. Or should I just throw sand in there? Was going to knock off the caps and red lock right them on. Have also thought about lining the tubes with plastic bags then filling with sand. I've heard the stories of the caps coming off and sand going everywhere.
Suggestions?

Congrats on the new rack! Comments presume design remains the same. I've owned a couple BL series (still have one) and helped with others.
The issue with filling the tubes are the rubber plugs in the tube where the horizontal bars attach. There is/was a small hole at the bottom of bar where it joined the tubes. If whatever you filled the tubes with (I used lead shot) displaces the rubber plugs, the fill can escape from the small holes if small enough. So plugging or epoxying those holes would be important with tube fill.
I've used lead shot (after filling those horizontal brace holes). If you remove the plugs and plug the holes, your fill will get into the horizontal bars adding mass. You can use adhesive strips on the sides not visible to deaden horizontal bars.
I relocated my lead shot filled rack once and one of the bottom caps fell off. Lead shot rolled everywhere on the hardwood floor. Only explanation I can come up with is weight on rack and vibration over time loosened the fit. Some type of adhesive would help.
Expanding foam insulation can be messy to deal with and possibly discolor the paint if it gets on the tubes.
The caps are getting thinner so use caution when knocking them out.
Consider removing the top caps and using foam split pipe insulation. Of course that is just damping the tube without adding mass. That is what I did on my newest BL rack.
Another possibility, plastic pipe with plugs or caps on each end cut to proper length that will fit snugly inside the tubes with caps on. Maybe combine with foam pipe insulation? Plug one end of pipe, fill them with sand or shot, seal other end. Note that you will have to shorten any pipes inserted in the tubes to allow for spike threads that protrude inside the tube past the threaded bottom caps.
Here is an example with foam insulation and 1/2" copper tubing filled with shot with pipe caps sweated on each end. Obviously working with copper is a lot more work compared to plastic pipe.

Anxious to hear how you like your rack. Saw this one on Amazon, and it's on my wish list. Also interested to see if you still feel the need to fill once you get it set up.2 Channel "Polk" Room:

I've pretty much decided to fill it with sand, just need to get my hands on this rack to see how I will follow through. Shipping weight looks to be a touch over 60lbs, so it looks to be pretty heavy as is. I picked it up on Amazon, it's been on my radar for a while. I will add pics as I fill and assemble, and all that good stuff!2 channel:

After days of delays thanks to fedex my new rack finally showed up. I'm very surprised how beefy this thing was packed. Tons of tape and bubble wrap... I mean a **** ton! Tore down the whole 2 channel set up and started popping off the end caps. I'm really glad I decided to red loctite the ends, I could easily pull some of the caps off by hand. The punch I was using was heavy enough itself to remove the top caps with a couple gentle hits. I then filled the columns with sand, which was good because this thing rang like a bell. After they were filled they had a dead thunk to them.Post edited by mikeyb128 on2 channel:

Beauty,eh?!! I like the looks of it. Clean and attractive to boot. Rock on Mikey!

Thank you! I've been eyeballing a new one for quite some time. Not totally setup, still have some tweaking, cleaning, and cable management to do. Was a lot of work setting this thing up and filling it with sand. Spent about 3 1/2 hours, didn't even Listen to it. But I have some new cables coming in a few weeks, and built some power cables for my amps, just waiting for furutech plugs, then things will be perfect !!2 channel:

Nice rack!
Just an fyi, the newer BL racks have been shipping with threaded inserts in the cross bars. Through a VTI dealer, I bought the rear screen that is supplied with some racks. Like $50 IIRC. It is supplied with four screws and brackets to fasten.
It can hide and help make routing wires neater. Or like my friend Jay (agfrost) said, just don't look at them...lol

I did use Velcro tape, but the way the Cary is designed with iec in the middle, and left and right inputs and outputs on either side of the preamp makes cable management tricky.

Beautiful looking rack you have there. Oh I meant the rack you keep your audio equipment in.

The other 2% will work for WalMart. -
VERY NICE set-up, the VTI can "make the system" kinda like the suit can "make the man".
Fine choice! -
Thanks for the compliments everyone. I've come across a bit of an issue with the new rack. It seems as though this tall rack has decreased my soundstage, must have something to do with blocking reflections off the wall behind the speakers, as my old rack was shorter. I'm glad the rack is modular so I can switch it up if needed. Going to give it a bit more time, might just be me lol.2 channel:

You are correct, a tall rack between the speakers will have a negative effect on your soundstage. Been there myself. I had the space to move my gear off to a sidewall, leaving just the amp between speakers.
Some audio types say keep the rack height below the tweeters or below the midrange with three ways.

Yes after some reading, that seems to be the rule
Of thumb. My speakers are 3 feet in front of the rack which helps. But looks like I will try to reconfigure the rack to be below the tweeter and midrange. Probably put the amps on the 7 inch sections, I have some spare spike shoes I can use. I even noticed taking CDs off the middle of the rack, and even moving my sub from mid wall to slightly behind the right speaker helped with soundstage, Crazy! Always learning with this hobby. Very surprised that small changes can have a huge effect.2 channel:

One can really run into issues with a turntable between the speakers. When I had a west wall setup with speakers boxed by corners and gear between speakers, anything above 70dB would cause horrible feedback. I had an isolation base for the turntable but it didn't help. With turntable/gear on sidewall, no feedback/dB limitations.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 *

Thanks man, it does look good. When I have more spare time I will try other configurations. Will have to tear it down and start from scratch. At this point I'm super happy it's a modular design. Would have screwed myself if it wasn't.
