Small Corner Horns

Yes they are SP-8Bs. Given their DCR, they mightbe 4 ohm voicecoils. That's OK, even if not ideal.
If the price is right, I'd grab 'em. -
-
mmm... you can check eBAY completed auctions.
My knee-jerk: anything up to a hunnert smackers the pair ain't a bad price.
Less is better, though ;- )
-
Having the matching drivers to these corner cabinets seems like a sweet deal.
-
Just grabbed a pair of these 6.5" for half price to play with.
-
ooh, excellent! I can't speak for everyone, but I'll be interested to hear what you think of 'em in those enclosures (and in general)! Very nice. Make a couple of "O" shaped adaptors and you're in business.

These Dayton Audio neo point source are very well made drivers with lots of audio bling; solid, copper color phase plug, cast baskets, push spring terminals, rolled cloth surround, embossed Dayton logo on the magnet.
In a simple, free air test last night, they sounded very direct and very forward; almost a horn type sound which I enjoy. They seemed to have no lack of HF detail, but obviously no LF due to the mounting. -
-
smiley face.
I hope you like them (in all seriousness).
Whatcha got in the way of amplification to bring to bear against them? Did I ask that already... I am too lazy to go back and look :- (

sounds like fun! love to hear them!2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

No tubes right now for amplification, but I'll try a few, small integrated amps.
-
The Daytons interested me as well, but I'm excited to mount this correct SP8B in the EV corner horns and have an experience...
-
Empathetic amplification is likely to be everything with those.
Too bad you don't live in Northern New England...
-
Hmmm... Empathetic amplification is a new term for me. This may be heresy, but I have a small Teac integrated amp that uses 25wpc B&O ICEpower modules. I've loved it on all other speakers, and will try it on these and the Daytons.
-
That would be a good choice, absent a single-ended, direct-heated triode amplifier or a good push-pull EL84 amplifier, from my perspective. FWIW (and it's not quite apples to apples, of course), Tripath chipset amplifiers sound pretty good with my Duplexes.
The biggest thing about drivers like those EVs is that they're very sensitive -- most modern amplifiers (though not all!) just don't perform well at extremely low output levels, say 10 to 100 milliwatts (mW).
I'd just hate to see you try an audiophile darling, 250 wpc solid state class AB behemoth and say "this thing sounds terrible" -- because it probably will. If you tried it with a single-ended 2A3 amplifier (or a Pass "FirstWatt" amp), you might (?!) have reached a very different conclusion.
Good luck, have fun & keep an open mind :- )
You're not going to hear perfection (even the SP8B, which wasn't inexpensive when new) was a fairly modest product by the standards of its era. You mightr (!?!) still find something to like there. See what you think of the midrange. Listen to well-recorded vocals and/or piano and see if they work for you.

Not to tie two different audio forums into one Gordian knot or anything...
;- )
but... Zingo, you might like to take a look at this thread on more or less the same topic (but a different, modern horn enclosure) currently running at AA:

Testing these speakers shows me that they do A LOT of things right; more than they should for the age and the simplicity. Corner loading really helps the bass which is too shy for my taste without the corners. Directly on axis the HF response is good, but can occasionally make recordings sound slightly vailed. The mid range, imaging, and detail is excellent, and I could see myself 3-way full range speakers for life; super tweeter and subwoofer.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like the experiment was, by and large, successful.
Now you'll have to start thinking about what kind of supertweeters to use ;-)
FWIW: This is what I use with the Duplexes. First order XO at ca. 10 kHz and a pad to keep them in line with the Altecs' output. There are, of course, many nice choices... and, no, not all of them are horns!

It was successful and my next test will be trying the Dayton's on my desktop in a 2.1 configuration crossed at about 150hz.
Any suggestions on mounting for the Daytons? OB would be pretty easy and would display the sexy backs of these drivers... -
Any idea for a good baffle design to use the Dayton's as desktop speakers? I think it would be neat to have clear plexi baffles make for them so all you would see if the drivers.
-
I don't, unfortunately. Maybe others do?
-
I started yesterday, and will finish cutting wood today for a tombstone shaped baffle. I'm not sure what exactly to expect, but it will give me a point of reference and proof of concept for desktop full range drivers.
-
thus:
This graph is sideways relative to the way most folks would think about "LF cutoff vs. baffle size"
source: http://jelabsarch.blogspot.com/2012/06/open-baffle.html
In other words, a small baffle rather rapidly approaches having no baffle at all... and, sort of conversely, the cone itself of a moderate sized speaker represents a small baffle in and of itself (i.e., the cone interferes with some of the front and back waves combining and cancelling each other out).
I guess the corollary is -- if you like the way a driver sounds in free space, you'll probably like it. If not, I am not sure there's much of any cabinet (or crossover) wizardry that will make it sound good ;- )
I am referring primarily to the midrange character of a MR driver, wide-range woofer, or "fullrange" driver.
-
Ya... I knew it would be a trade off of response for small desktop size.

Looks good to me!
So -- whaddya think of their "tone"?

Someone asked about larger corner horns?
I have a nice pair of late 50's Klipschorns, but with upgraded componentry. They are powered by Mike Sander's "Quicksilver" Horn Amps. They have a super low noise floor so there is no idling hiss coming out of the HF drivers. At the incredibly low power levels the tubes should outlast me.
