Universal "Back To Black" series reissues

I've seen these from time to time but have yet to pick up any. Anybody have any experience with these vinyl reissues?

I thought I remembered hearing they were garbage, but I could be wrong. Hopefully others chime in.

Don't have a lot (any?) direct experience. Think the consensus is that they're not the very highest quality, and perhaps are sourced from digital sources rather than original tapes. Pressing quality varies, some were plagued by excessive surface noise while I seem to recall that others were reported to be better.

Check the Steve Hoffman forum archives, they live for discussing quality of different pressings.

One truth is that sometimes a B-to-B pressing is the easiest to lay one's hands on!

I have a "Back To Black" copy of "The Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East". The pressing quality is excellent. The albums are 180g and have very little, if any, surface noise and almost no, if any, warpage. The mastering does indeed sound that it may come from a digital source and is compressed and loud. The guitar solos are very piercing and fatiguing. I really don't like turning the volume up on this one. Please bear in mind that I'm running this through a tube based stereo. That probably takes some of the edge off. I couldn't imagine playing this on some of the solid state stereos that I use to have. Now, with that being said, I don't, at this time, have any other recordings of this to compare to. I may, in the near future try to acquire a decent original copy of this album to see how it stands up against this "Black To Black" copy.

Interesting that is the one you have as I have an early pressing of the same and can say turning it up is no problemo at all.
