Monitor 7 questions

Just picked up a pair of monitor 7's locally. I am guessing these are early 7's?

Issue's are tweeters need replacing. My guess RDO194. Can anyone confirm.

Also the MW6502's are playing BUT are COMPLETELY FROZEN. Is this a possible magnet shifting issue or should they be replaced? If so, I would prefer vintage MW 6502's as opposed to the newer model. Just like the look of the older ones.

I will post a WTB for vinatge MW6502's if you guys recommend it...

Are the fuses good ? Make sure the area is clean contact. Those are Peerless tweeters. Get some more & enjoy them. Pull the woofers out & see the label on back to identify. Polk may have some

    Fuses are good.

I have a extra pair of RDO194's. Could I use those?

194's are drop in replacement for SL2000's. So im not sure. Others may chime in

I guess I could look for MW6502 and use the RDO194 since I plan to update the crossovers. And hopefully Larry's rings when they are around again.

You could re-center those 6500 magnets - check for continuity of the voice coil first (if you don't have a multimeter, use a battery with the driver unplugged from the crossover). I have some spare 6500s of that generation (bare metal with the surround paper material) that I've centered and glued if you preferred not to do it yourself.

RDO194s are definitely NOT drop-in replacements for the peerless tweeters. You will need to find some original Peerless replacements or you can get new replacements from Midwest Speaker in the Minneapolis metro area. Some folks on the Forum have used the ones from Midwest and really like them. Others prefer the originals over them.

Good luck with your rehab project. The Monitor 7s are faves of the Monitor lineup for many people here. What's the condition of the cabinets and the grilles?

Here's the Peerless copy tweeters from Midwest on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Peerless-Copy-8-ohm-Tweeter-Good-Replacement-for-Polk-ADS-Speakers-MT-4115-8-/150364380186?hash=item23026a5c1a:m:mT__EuJfZaMx5mlSTZS7VJQ

They've sold over 140 of them in this listing alone, with no negative FB.

Not an endorsement and no affiliation.

I read quite a few posts here that state that the 7's were Polks best attempt in the Monitor series.
I really want to hear a pair again, because when I bought my first pair back in the early 90's, I ended up exchanging them for a set of 5's, because I thought the 7's bass sounded flabbier than the 5's.
I knew absolutely nothing about Polk speakers then and now wonder if I just had a pair that might have been badly sealed or such.
Guess I'll be scouring Craigslist for a pair.

I just got a pair 1981 7's with Peerless. They are nice, the upper mid's get a bit confused and there is alot less bass than the SDA CRS's I had of course. I find myself upping the tone controls which I try to avoid with decent sources. I remember the 5Jr's sounding great as a kid when friends had new ones. Interesting about the trade, I could see that actually.

Check for air leaks tat. If the box is leaky it will affect the bass but yes do not expect them to bang like the CRS.

I dont see any leaks. I dont like hand-testing speakers for rub but I found that when I pushed the radiator it pushed the 6.5" in the opposite direction. Is this from air pressure or are they linked somehow that would cause this? If pressure it musty be a good seal!

They are supposed to do exactly that. Push on the passive and the driver goes in the opposite direction. Push the passive and hold it in, usually the driver will "hold" at the extended position for 2-4 seconds then go back in. That seems to be the norm. If it goes back immediately you have a leak...

You will not see air leaks.

Push the PR in and hold it in while watching the mid-drivers pop out. Count how many seconds it takes for them to return to their resting position. It should be 3 to 5 seconds.

I have not heard this era of 7's but I suspect the crossovers need to rebuilt. The capacitors are probably dried out and out of spec, or possibly a resistor has overheated. There are different options for rebuilding. Good resistors are cheap, good caps can be expensive. Sonicaps are recommended, or you could go the quick and cheap route and replace them with electrolytics. This should clean up the upper mids.

That's what Ive been suspecting, glad to hear it may help that particular bandwidth. Recapping old guitar amps can be dramatic (sometimes not good way).

You can use an old mechanics' trick and spray soapy water on the seals. If it blows bubbles, it's leaking.

Picked up an early Adcom preamp for $50. and it makes the bass come out for the Monitor 7A's. Big improvement over Yamaha 120wpc.
