PC Backups?

Hey folks:

Ever wonder what would happen if all of a sudden the hard drive on your PC died and you couldn't recover any of the information?

How many of you do some sort of scheduled backup on the important data stored on your PC?

I had to think of this due to some things at work. First off, some dingbat in one of our offices deleted a file off the network, then called crying and panicking that we had to get it back. Thursday I had to use our weekly backup tapes to restore the file (which I was successful in doing). Since the boss and supervisor were out of state and I was running the show for a few days, I had to set our weekly backup tapes in place for last nights backup.

At home, I have 2 PC's. One is my primary screaming machine and the other is an old 400mhz P2 that has MS Server loaded and 2 hard drives configured in a mirrored array (the 2nd HD makes an exact duplicate of the first). I backup all my important stuff like IE Favorites, Outlook contacts, pictures, documents and other items that I could not recover if my main PC died.

For those without a 2nd machine, if you have a CD burner, just make a copy of your important items and store them in a single folder on your machine, then burn this file to a CD.

You never know when that HD is going to crash taking all those important items with it. Even a really nasty virus can render your HD unusable. You can always buy another HD and reload the software, but certain things go bye bye!

    HBOMB:

Off hand, not sure why it's doing that.

Have you tried searching on Technet?

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.mspx

Our office uses Lotus Notes (clients and server), so no Exchange Server going on there.

If ya want me to look into it further, let me know. I have some sources I could call.

john - I use a secondary hd to store the important files. The 2nd hd is not shared to any users but the admin. Also, I always save an old hd that has all necessary system files that will help me get back the pc up. CD as my back up media, is a bit too much for my pocket since I back up every day.

I back my personal data (at home) up to a server that I'm running on my network here. Works well for me...

At work, we run tapes. We keep 10 days worth of tapes... one on-site copy and one off-site.

I don't keep important info on my computer. I keep it on floppy disks, CD's or ZIP disks. At work I keep the important info replicated to the server's shared space. If my machine goes down, I restore from the replication. I also have periodic back ups of the important documents on CD.
