5jr+ polyfill location and amount

Where is the poly supposed to be in the 5jr+? Mine is all stuffed up behind the tweeter. There is none behind the MW. It feels like there is some missing. If I pull it down it is a thin sheet and I don't think it would stay in place so I pushed it back up.

That's what mine looks like too. I just checked. Goes about halfway down on the MW, I could push it all up into the tweeter cavity but that seems too bunched up that way. I just left it how I found it.

I checked one of mine. It is was rolled and packed in behind the tweeter. I pulled the roll out to see if there were two rolls like my 5A's or how I could unroll it or adjust it. This poly-fil is a thicker and maybe less dense sheet than what was in my 5A's. It was closer to folded in half than rolled. Part of it was split like you could peel it in half to have two thinner sheets. Maybe this is what you felt, or it got split in two when someone tried to pull it out.

If I unroll the sheet It would loosely cover the tweeter and MW. It was very loose, but it should stay. IMO it seems like there is not enough, like there should have been two rolls, or two thinner rolls like what was in my 5A's In the end I wound up rolling it back up and shoving it behind the tweeter as I found it. I don't know what is "correct" My 5A's had it behind the PR from the factory, which according to the forum is incorrect. Changing locations did change the overall sound.

I did not do any listening tests. Something else came up. No poly-fil behind the MW could cause it to sound louder or create reflections that could muddy the sound. They are my surround speakers right now. I don't remember what the mids sounded like, only that the tweeters didn't scream like the SL2000's. I did notice the SL2500's rolled off the very high frequencies much sooner than anything else I have which was disappointing. I figured I need to do a cap replacement and maybe put in some RDO-198's. They are doing fine as surrounds with equalization for now.

Thanks. I checked both this time. The one I had not checked is one fat sheet folded in half stuffed behind the tweeter. The one I checked before is split down the middle into two thin sheets for half the sheet. The thin half sheet is what was originally hanging down a little and I pulled it down some more. I don't think I ripped it. It nearly fell down when I pulled it.

There is more polyfill than I originally thought, but it doesn't seam like there is enough. I will see if both sheets in one speaker sound better this weekend.

The extra poly fill was a big help. It cleaned a lot of the midrange and vocals up. I think it increased the bass too. I am going to try and and find more poly fill so I can do both speakers.

I noticed that if the speakers are tilted up or the PR is about ear level or higher they sounded better. With the tweeters at ear level the midrange sounds bad. Everything blurs together.

My 4A's still sound cleaner in the midrange at all listening positions, but I think it is worth trying the caps and maybe the tweeters.

I did some listening tests this weekend. I'm pretty sure my 5jr+ with the SL2500 need new crossovers. Certain midrange frequencies sounded like they were over lapping and getting spikes or nulls, and the high end rolled off. Where I was in the room and the height of my ears to the speakers made drastic changes. They sounded best when sitting on top of my SDA 1C and I was sitting down. If I was standing the there was very little midrange detail. The sound changed as I moved up and down. If there was little information, they sounded pretty good, so they are doing fine for the most part as surrounds.

I tried the ported 5Jr with the SL2000 and 4A in the same position and didn't have the issues. The SL2000 sounded really good aside from the hump. RDO's should be amazing. My 4A had a some changes when moved around but they were minor. The 4A crossover with 2 caps are going to cost as much as both the 5jr's. :/ I may rethink that, much less changing the cabinet volume with large caps. :p

When I went to play with the poly-fil, I found the ported 5jr actually has more than the 5jr+. I suppose in theory because the 5jr+ cabinet is larger. I added the 5jr poly-fil in a roll behind the MW, similar to my 5A and I have to agree they sounded better with fuller bass, but after a crossover upgrade who knows. Out of curiousity I tried the ported 5Jr without the poly fill and it wasn't horrible. I think there was a little mid range ringing, but with the SL2000 it was tough to tell.

I solved my problem short term. I am using the 5jr+ as two mini subwoofers for my 4A's. It sounds good. I laid the 5's on the side and the 4As are on top on with the drivers aligned. I put little rubber pads between the 4's and 5's. It looks good and they have not moved.
