Computer to home theater convergence

I want to connect a new G4 Mac to my home theater system (Denon AVR-1802 Polk RT55i CS245i FX300i PSW 650). Anybody know how to get the best quality (aka a digital bitstream of some sort) audio out of the computer and into my optical or coaxial digital in on my receiver?
The New G4's and iMAC (700 - 800 MHz, www.apple.com) have USB ports that support USB audio peripherals, a headphone jack, and mini jack that is powered by a small internal amp (18W) which connects to some speakers made by harman/kardon. Ideally i would like to get good sound repro through my polk system without having to buy a whole another (and probably inferior) system for my computer.
Thanks for any ideas/advice! --Tom
