What is this flap thing?

68ajuh0ncepg.jpg

What is the purpose of this flap above the tweeter? This is from a pair of 3.1s. I have seen it before, not sure what it does, if anything. I just want to cut it off or tuck it in or something.

From the sales literature... "And to eliminate any possibility of phase anomalies and other coloration, Polk developed a unique diffraction spoiler which dramatically improves audible frequency response and imaging. By controlling diffraction, smearing of the sonic image and peaky characteristics are eliminated."

Basically, it keeps the upper mid-woofer from interfering with the dispersion of the tweeter.

Thanks all. They are not mine. I was just wondering. Did they do that with other models?

RTA-12B and C have two diffraction plates. One in the top hat and one in the tweeter mount.
