Sounds like you may have wires touching each other causing a short maybe or out of phrase make sure that positive and negative wires are not cross over. I would suggest looking at your connections at both the AVR and speakers

whenever there is an explosion or the volume ramps up, my receiver turns off, goes into diagnostic mode, I unplug the a5's everything is fine. ?
Sorry I didn't read this post before I replied, so the 5,s work it just when the amp is under load?
Sounds like you're pushing the amp to hard.

Well I was completely off target with my guess, it was probably a resistor and it make sense now that you explained that it was a open box, Someone else had that speaker played it too hard and fried the resistor.
I had done that with my 7's a few years ago and it actually worked perfectly because Trey (VR3) done both crossover for the cost of the parts free labour.
