Did the SDA market crash?

Hey guys, long time no post. Guess I've been pretty content with my system the last half decade or so.

Anyway, had kind of an odd experience recently. I was hanging out with some other audio guys and they all mentioned they'd bought or sold 1.2s/1.2TLs recently for $800-1200. Back when I bought my pair in 2007 I remember threads here about guys driving a thousand miles so they could buy a set for $3K, and then dump another $500 into modding them.

When did the big SDA market flatten out?

I don't ever remember a time when 1.2TLs routinely went for 3K. There might have been some isolated incidences where the speakers were particularly nice--already modded, for example.

Mostly, I think there were advertisements for 2K--3K speakers that didn't actually sell. Craigslisters or eBayers trolling for idiots, and not catching any.

I'm not seeing the SDA market flatten out. I think prices are rising, and product isn't as available on the used market as it was a few years ago--many who weren't committed to the SDA speakers sold-out when the economy went to sh it in '07--08, or soon thereafter as their own life was affected.

I'm not sure how many were actually bought for 3K but I recall $2.5K was reasonable for an asking price. I bought mine for $1500 back then and the seller was crushed with PMs from buyers saying they'd take them sight unseen. At the time I'd never seen a pair listed so low.

The guys I talked to last week considered the market around a grand these days.

How much did those SRS's go for a little while ago, was it $600?

I'm talking with a guy right now who wants to give me $1K plus a set of KEF 105.2s plus a set of ADS L1230s in trade. The speakers need minor repairs but they're both to my tastes. Any reason not to do this?

I can't realistically keep the 1.2TLs because I ended up having to move back into a tiny apartment and their qualities are totally lost in a room the size of a closet.

The rarity of what you have would be the main consideration, if it were me, along with lack of ready opportunity to replace them if your situation changes, and you find that you miss them. Is the living space a somewhat temporary consideration?

re: the trades - I get that it's about placement/sound, but also, where are you going to put 2 pairs of speakers where you can't place one larger set that has, most likely, a smaller overall footprint?

If it's a more permanent change, and you can't use or find some way to stash the 1.2TL's, I'd probably try to hold out for cash on them, and maybe go with a pair of Monitor 7's or 10's on some squat stands to stick with the vintage sound. I use a pair of M10's in a smaller space and I really enjoy them.

Unless, of course, you *really* want those speakers he's offering you in partial trade...

Yeah, it's not an easy decision. I've been waffling over it for a long time. The living situation is temporary, but it's probably a matter of a couple years and in the meantime I feel like having the extra cash and listenable speakers might make more sense.

As far as the trade, both pairs he has are fairly uncommon and extremely highly regarded. Also smaller footprint than the Polks, so they've been at the top of my replacement list. Getting both like this saves me the trouble of searching for them. Then I can A/B at my leisure and sell one pair. They're worth around $400/pair.
