Rest in peace George Martin

Legendary Beatles producer George Martin has passed at the age of 90.

This horrible year for passings in the music world just got exponentially worse.

R.I.P. to a true gentleman and professional with true vision. I don't have a good feeling about some others, including Merle Haggard who was just re-hospitalized with pneumonia. This could be a rough year for passings in the music world.

    The 5th Beatle indeed.

Went to the Daily Mail (UK) web site to see what they had to say about Sir George. Very nice write up.

Mr. Martin, if I could have talked to anyone past or present, you were at the top of my list. I can only imagine the stories you would have to share.

    RIP.

No, he was the fired Beatle wasn't he? Didn't Billy Preston often refer to himself as the 5th Beatle.

The whole Beatle census thing gets somewhat complex, as there was Stu Sutcliffe as well as Pete Best in the pre-Ringo days.

Sir George's contributions to the moptops' sound, however, were unquestionable, and for his efforts the "fifth Beatle" sobriquet was indeed oft applied to him :- )

He (and the recording engineers) got pretty amazing mileage out of a four-track studio & recorder(s)! Pretty darned good sound, too.

Those Altec Duplex monitors in the control room didn't hurt, of course ;- )

Once heard a story about some of the tracks for Sgt. Pepper's album were laid down on a Teac 3340 deck.
