are power conditioners crucial?

i've pretty much used surge protectors (not totally crappy ones, but, relatively decent ones from APC, et al).

when i was purchasing a big screen tv, the salesguy tried to convince me to get a monster power conditioner surge protector like this one

my question is, is that a worthwhile investment? my initial thought is that my APC surge protector is good enough.

comments? opinions? be gentle; i don't know much about surge protectors.

It is interesting that this thread was started today because I received the March 18th addition of EDN.

here is a link to the article titled AC-powerline-quality standards:

Its a tough read but understandable to non-techies...

    Very interesting IMO!

I just got my Monster HTS 3600 in last week. I have hooked everything up to it, and the video has gotten a little better. I have not tested it too much to tell if there was a sound quality improvement, but I can notice an upgrade in the picture quality.

My 2 cents Yes it is important. If not only for the protection but for the ac filtering. The better surges like the one in the pic HTS 1000MKII is a great ac conditioner / surge protector. If your running high draw amps or other high draw equipment you would need a protector with dedicated a high current outlets. Match the surge to your system it is important. Here we have bad ac lots of ac noise & at most homes even radio out of the outlet. My home was the same. I have used the ht 800 all the way up to the htps7000 & the avs 2000 which I currently use. & I did notice a slight inprovement video & audio with each step up. Again it is up to you. My feeling is that any gain/improvement is what I look for,the monster units gave me improvments I could see & hear & a protected gurantee that way more than my system is worth. We had bad weather here the past month. My computers, av systems, & electric razor are all plugged in to monster power products, during the bad weather we had power outages & surges. My A/C pluggen into another companys surge burned out, the surge smells like burnt plastic & the power switch is stuck, My aquarium 100 gal with a 1500 GPH water pump again plugged into a surge by another well known manufacture the pump burnt out the windings on the arm was black & burnt. All my electronics that was plugged into monster survived. My small av 200 that my razor was plugged into sacrificed itself but saved my razor. : )

    Poor little AV200. ;)

I definitely noticed improved with my HTS1000. I plan on eventually getting the HTPS7000 someday when I have a few extra ducketts.
