I just bought Candy-O a few days ago, I highly recommend it. The first one is good too.

+2 on both - Debut or Candy-O are both great albums, not a bad song on the first one - it's one of those special LP's.

Yeah, just buy 'em both! :- )

The critics preferred their first album, but I still think that the second one every bit as strong.

Well -- I think it's safe to say that the Talking Heads were more serious -- and/or they took themselves more seriously.

Actually, three of them went to the Rhode Island School of Design. I remember being very impressed with Tina Weymouth when I saw them in '78. I don't think she was even trained as a musician. Lol. Later, she and Franz did the Tom Tom Club thing which had some pretty decent stuff, and Jerry Harrison had a solo career, I'm pretty sure I have some of his vinyl. He went on to produce a lot of musicians.

I like(d) the Tom Tom Club albums -- I think I have two of them (were there two of them; maybe I have two copies of the same one).

I always figured Tina Weymouth was put on the bass because it only has four strings and she couldn't do much damage there :-P but -- in fact, I agree -- she does add something to the mix with her playing.

(gotta admit, I am a big fan of the e-lectric bass)

Oh, back, more or less, on topic. The only issue I have with the Talking Heads -- I always felt like they were someone's inside joke and I (and other Philistines like me, who didn't cut their teeth in astonishingly hip NY clubs) didn't quite get the joke, nor was I (we) particularly welcome - by those who did get the joke - to even try to.

Still like, admire, and enjoy the band, though.

Both are great groups and I have all of the LPs for these groups. Talking Heads are more creative both in sound and lyrically. I don't tire of them because there is more going on in the music. The Cars are much more catchy almost like hard pop with a wee bit of new wave. They are more suited for casual listening. To me this is a comparison of two different groups rather than two similar groups.

Maybe I drew a connection because I only own one album of each. "Speaking in Tongues" and "Candy-O". As soon as I listened through "Candy-O" I thought to myself this reminds me a lot of Talking Heads. Perhaps "Speaking in Tongues" is a different album from the rest.

The Cars were thought of as part of the "New Wave" at the time (late 1970s) -- but they were far more radio-friendly than almost all of the actual New Wave.

I just mentioned The Fabulous Poodles because a couple of good friends of mine turned me on to them and they were all into it. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with them. We were listening to Bob Dylan the day before lol.

I think I rememember reading/hearing that the "Candy-O" cover was Alberto Vargas' last work.
