Anybody belong to a local audio club?

I just got back from a fantastic listening session at a member's house from our local audio club. The man is a retired machinist who built is own turntable that runs through an EAR 834P phono stage to a pair of Joule Electra Stargate amps to a pair of Silverline Sonatina lll speakers. The sound was sublime and everything just disappeared. Great tunes and fantastic conversation all night.

He machined every piece of the turntable himself and the stand it sits on weighs 300lbs. It was a work of art and a joy to listen to. Sorry for the less than ideal phone pictures.

Does anyone else belong to a local audio club?

Nice looking turntable. Is the chrome piece at the end of the table a record clamp-weight? It almost looks too big. I wish there was a audio group around here. There is a nice group called the Omaha Blues Society which sponsors regular events, so we talk about music mostly, usually at gigs.

It is and he machined it out of brass. The platter weighs 30lbs and it uses an inverted bearing. He also installed two magnets to hold about 20lbs of its weight so the bearing effectively only carries a 10lb load.
There was a lot of thought and time in the shop that went into his turntable.

We have a fantastic one here ,it's HAS, Houston Audio Society . We usually try to have a group meeting once a month. Great group of mainly professional, highly educated audiophiles and some audio manufacturers, AV business owners, but open to all. A lot like we have here. :)
